Review
2 stars
Unpopular opinion here.
I have read many Amelia Hutchins books and I was awaiting this one with great expectation as book two ended on a huge cliffy.
Now I am all “what the heck did I read????”.
Honestly I skimmed the second half of the book because:
1) I was really lost as in: who puts monsters and beasts of Greek mythology with Christian evil, archangels etc? Was I reading something from mythology/fae/demons or something else?
2) I did not like the overabundance of gore. At all. Some I can read about but here it was a permanent explosion of blood, brains leaking out of skulls, guts displayed etc etc.
3) I did not like how Lena evolved. She was between “I don’t care I am a badass b@tch then like a dog in heat (sorry but overdoing the “he is so hot I am all wet and I want to impale myself on ….” is just a deterrent for me) then all crying and hot mess;
4) Either I am dumb either the plot and twists did not make any sense! Unbelievable explanations as to why she was what she was, why “he” was killed, how she was created were just confusing and messy. Honestly it was like reading a foreign language. I had to reread some passages yet did not grasp it at all.
It really saddens me to write such review as I am not usually very hard to please. I always try to find something positive about the book as I am conscious of the work authors put in their writing but once again WHAT DID I READ????? What did Amelia do here? Am I missing the whole point? Am I completely mistaken? Maybe as no one is perfect. But at the end of the day it was just not for me.
Will I still read Amelia’s books?
Well not this series I’ve lost interest (that’s a pity because I loved the first two books). Her other books maybe. This is the first time that she’s disappointed me.
Now as this story gets many good ratings, don’t let this review deter you but make up your own mind.
Have you read this series? Did you have similar experience with other series that you loved?
Thanks for reading!
I can not stand when a book is messy and the gore – is not necessary and the impaling…Ugghh I am already rolling my eyes. I hope the next book you read it better.
Mary
I’m so sorry this book was such a huge let down. That’s so sad when you’re in the middle of a series and then it crashes and burns, ugh. I’m sorry. Here’s hoping you love another one of her books in the future *fingers crossed*.
Oh no- sorry this was so disappointing! I hate when plot twists don’t make sense and random mythology/ideas are smooshed together. Great review though!
Thank you!
GAH!!!! I just finished the first book in this series and am looking forward to the next two (I just bought them). So seeing a 2 star from you makes me leery but I’ll forge ahead and see where Ms Hutchins takes me… 🙁 Thanks for your honesty, my friend!
And I can’t wait to read your thoughts about the third book Trisy!
SOPHIE!!! I AM SO GLAD IT WASN’T JUST ME!!!!!!!!!!!! I felt like maybe I was confused about the first two because what was that???? The plot was all over the place and the whole book left me reeling.
And now Meeghan I am so happy it’s not only me either!!!!
It sounds like it was so different from the first book. hat a shame and I’ll be avoiding this! I don’t think I’ve ever read a review of yours where you couldn’t find something redeeming about it.
I know this is so unusual Laura …and luckily!
Damn..that’s disappointing.
Well…yes!
OMG, this sounds like a total mess, Sophie! I loved the first book in this series! It’s too bad the sequel didn’t live up to your expectations! I can handle gore but Lena sounds awful in this book! Horny heroines are my major book turn offs! And Confusing plot twists? Nope, definitely not for me either! Great honest review!
You are most welcome Raven! I wonder if you’ll try to read the other books of this series…
Wow! It’s so unusual for you to not love a book, or at least, part of it, or to give anything 2 stars! Not only must this book have missed the mark, it sounds like it was thrown together, last minute, with maybe a cavalier attitude, ‘take it or leave it’.
Bad writing is bad writing!
Well I know thiq is unusual for me Alexandra but as you said bad writing is bad writing!
