Synopsis

In the shadow of the Blue Ridge, Annie begins to track the truth, navigating a decade’s worth of secrets, folklore of witches and crows, and a whole town that prefers to forget. But while the case may have been buried, echoes of the past linger. And Annie’s arrival stirs someone into action.

I want more from that author and from the narrator.

The book in one word: atmospheric

Narrator: flawless—made me want more from both the author and the voice.

The writing: gripping and evocative. Every word felt purposeful, drawing me deeper into the Appalachian fog.

The main character : relatable, real, determined and kind.

The setting : a secluded small town in the Appalachian Mountains where everybody knows everybody but do they really? The setting adds as much to the story as any character.

The story arc: a cold case. Three little girls disappeared ten years ago. One was returned. What happened to the others?

The side characters:

Max – a desperate and sweet young man determined to find his little sister who disappeared ten years ago (Max). I wanted to hug him and protect him from the world’s cruelties.

The baker – a talented young mom, warm-hearted and resilient.

The recluse – an older woman who dabbles in card readings and remedies, living on the town’s fringes.

The piano teacher – widowed young, melancholic yet graceful, with a timeless elegance.

The pastor –carrying a mysterious past.

The desperate mother judged as “trashy” by the town, and abused by her husband. She is determined to find what happened to her daughter all those years ago.

The sheriff & his deputy – protective, bullish, and handsome, adding another layer of tension.

And beyond them, a whole web of townsfolk—each one a potential suspect.

Overall feelings: I was completely immersed. Thanks to vivid writing, I could see, feel, smell, and even hear the small town’s pulse: the caw of crows, the scent of pastries, the fog rolling over the mountains. For hours, I lived inside this book.

For a few hours I was Annie and I was on the hunt for the truth.

I was poking the hornet’s nest and reaping trouble, making new friends and raging at life’s unfairness.

This story held my full attention from start to finish. And when it ended, I was left with one clear thought: I need more Annie.

As a PI, she’s perfect for an interconnected series of standalones—and I truly hope Archer Sullivan gives us just that.

Bring it on Archer, I am ready for a sequel!
