#BookBoyfriendChallenge Day 21

Protective

I could choose Uber Alpha to embody the protective book boyfriend. You know the kind that does not share his woman and it would fit perfectly.

But protecting to me is also caring for someone. Not always because you are the strongest but because you are pure of heart and place the other’s happiness above yours.

Today I’m choosing two incredible book characters.

They touched my heart like few did.

They are not the biggest or the baddest.

They had a bad start in life and both are on the outskirts. Sometimes mocked by β€œnormal” people or wealthier people.

Yet both will sacrifice everything to protect not only the woman or the man for one of them (because who said book boyfriends could only be heterosexual???) but their friends too.

If you haven’t read these stories yet and want something deeply moving and incredibly beautiful you should!

Today I have ex eco:

Yoss or Yossarian from One Day Soon by A. Meredith Walters AND Ox or Oxen from Wolfsong by TJ Klune.

Here is what I wrote about Yoss

β€œIll equipped to survive on the street, naΓ―ve Imi will Β be rescued from abuse by Yoss, 18 years old, living on the street since he turned 12.

Yoss introduced Imi to his family of friends, all homeless teenagers and all endearing characters: Shane the boy with the skateboard, Bug the addict with the lame jokes, Di the pierced girl,… They all followed Yoss and had each other’s back.

Yoss is a β€œsavior” and he protected his friends the only way he knew: by selling his body to earn some money so he could help them to survive.
”Yossarian Frazier wasn’t an overly complicated person. He was smart. He was thoughtful. He was generous and kind. He was loyal to a fault. And he was someone who has been forced to make choices that would shatter most people.”

More than anything else, he did not want to taint Imi. She was pure and innocent and he wanted to shelter her.

Yoss made everything beautiful , meaningful. Each trove was a treasure to be cherished. He showed Imi she could be happy, live wonderful moments.

Yoss is truly one of the most beautiful characters I’ve ever met in a book. He was so strong and so broken at the same time. I wanted to take him in my arms and protect him from this ugly world, like he did for Imi. You can’t not love Yoss. He was a very beautiful person. My heart broke each and every time he had to β€œgo out” as it destroyed him little by little but he did it nonetheless, not only to survive but to provide food and clothes for his friends and, above all else, to protect Imi the best way he could.
”Here was a boy barely holding himself together. He seemed as though he wanted to curl into himself. I wanted to shield him from everything horrible. Everything ugly. Just as he had been trying to do for me.”

Favorite quote to express who Yoss was:

β€œI know who you are in here. I trusted the eighteen-year-old boy who made sure I was fed. Who protected me. Who loved me. And I trust the man he became. Sure, people can change, but I see who you are.”
― A. Meredith Walters, One Day Soon

Now what I wrote about OxΒ :

β€œOx so big, too slow always feeling inadequate, not enough but holding everyone together because he simply was Ox. He was different. He was more.
Always helping and caring and putting others before him. And he broke my heart at least a hundred times.

He took care of his mom. He was barely a teen when his dad left and he promised her he would always protect her. This scene was the second of the many cracks in my heart… β€œShe touched my face. Her hands smelled like salt and french fries and coffee. Her thumbs brushed against my wet cheeks. β€œWhat happened?” I looked down at her, because she’d always been small and at some point in the last year or so, I’d grown right past her. I wished I could remember the day it happened. It seemed monumental. β€œI’ll take care of you,” I promised her. β€œYou don’t ever need to worry.”

Β

Favorite quote to express his protective side:

β€œI needed to see him. To make sure he was okay. To tell him how sorry I was. That I never wanted to leave him. That I never wanted to be anywhere but by his side. All I ever wanted was to keep him safe. Ever since that first day on the road, when he spoke and moved like a little tornado, all I ever wanted was to make sure nothing ever happened to Joe Bennett. He was coming for me. I”
― T.J. Klune, Wolfsong
