Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Today’s theme is: Books I Enjoyed that were Out of my Comfort Zone
I had a hard time finding books today as I had first to wonder what my comfort zone was! And my comfort zone evolved with time. At some point in my life I had never read LGBTQ read for example.
So here below are books that have been out of my comfort zone at a moment in time, withe the reader that I was at that moment but that I ended up enjoying, often so much that I read more of the same genre after!
Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. This is a real “out of my comfort zone” because its topic is an incest. A romantic and sexual relationship between blood sister and brother.
And yes, said like that it’s awful. And yes at the end of the book I was still convinced that incest is bad and shouldn’t happen. But that story was so beautiful and dramatic that I ended up loving it and hurting for these characters so bad!
As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zulfa Kathou.
That one was out of my comfort zone because it was so hard to read! We are talking about war, civil war, and people dying of hunger and bullets.
If We Were Villains by ML Rio was so dramatic and savage and gothic that I was uncomfortable reading it and yet it’s still one of the best books I have ever read.
Red Rising by Pierce Brown was out of my comfort zone because I never read science fiction books! Yet that series is fabulous!
Wolfsong by TJ Klune was out of my comfort zone as I had never read a MM romance before! I was afraid I would hate it and yet I ended up loving it so much that it has become one of my favorite genres.
Black Lies by Alessandra Torre was out of my comfort zone because I hate lies and I hate cheating in books! Yet here, there is a twist.
Becoming by Michele Obama was also out of my comfort zone as I never read non fiction books! Well except for work or university that is. It was also my first audiobook ever (and since I got the bug and can’t be stopped).
And the last one that I could think of is Bonds that Tie by J Bree as I hate “why choose” and reverse harem books. Yet here, that worked perfectly!

So true that ‘comfort zones’ evolve over time and the books that qualify as out of your comfort zone one day, may end up being a regular read later on!
Red Rising was defo out my comfort zone! It was so violent!
I still remember when Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma came out and EVERYONE was reading it. I haven’t read it but I’m still curious about it.
I think Forbidden would be hard for me to read, but now I’m curious because you think it’s such a beautiful story.
It’s great you found so many books that you enjoyed outside of your zone.
