Last week has been exausting between few sleep thanks to my old dog waking us up multiple times at night and work being very demanding.
I am also kind of the last one standing in a small group of experts, all of the other having found jobs elsewhere…
If I have many talents (ok I also have many flaws) I can’t do the job meant for four people on my own…
The incoming weeks/months will be interesting to say the least!
And today I wanted to rant a little (or a lot) in this post as I am truly fed up with cancel culture!
Now it’s Julie Soto who will pull out of an author’s convention because people don’t like her past as a fanfiction author based on a fictional love story between Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger!
Please, give me a break!
I know that JK Rowling stance against transgender is unforgivable and I am all for diversity, being inclusive and all but:
1)An author is not his creation and that would be good if people realized it!
If I can understand people being outraged with JK Rowling stance and not wanting her to earn any more money from them then they can just stop buying her books and merch!
No need to hunt down readers, authors or bookstagrammers who have another opinions on a series!
2)JK Rowling doesn’t earn any money from the fanfiction inspired by her characters. So all people are doing when cancelling these fanfiction authors is hurt them and not JK Rowling.
And this is only a small example that is linked to JK Rowling but there are other (too many) examples like Tillie Cole, Ali Hazelwood etc etc.
I wonder how these toxic people who are so hateful can sleep at night, truly.
I have been raised to be kind to others and have empathy, to have all the facts before accusing others… sigh.
OK rant over! Sorry!

I’m so with you on this. It sucks for other authors who may have written their fanfiction, or developed their love of HP before JK started showing all the things that she feels that make people not want to support her. Even so, if we canceled every artist ever for things they did that aren’t great, there would not be a ton left. I feel your pain about doing other peoples’ work by yourself. To be fair it was just me doing both my and my library clerk’s work when they didn’t hire anyone for me last year. And then having admin trying to get me to take over things for them, plus all the technology I had to do. I hope they get you some help. Fingers crossed it looks like I might have a clerk this year!

I am in agreement with you on cancel culture, it’s completely counterproductive. I am a free speech absolutist, and I also believe one should separate the artist from their work. This is the first I’ve heard about the drama about people connecting fanfic to JK Rowling’s work, just seems to me a ridiculous thing to meltdown about.

There was another book published recently (The irresistible urge to fall for your enemy) that was apparently Hermione/Draco fanfic based and the vitriol was intense. I loved the book and was so excited to talk about it but boy did Threads come for me! JKR is a trash human, but there is no reason for everyone to bully those who get inspiration from her fictional characters.
I read that one and loved it too Samantha! I am not on Thread so I think I am spared somehow!
I’m with you on the cancel culture, Sophie. I separate the art from the creator – I strongly disagree with Rowling’s views, but I’ll always be a fan of Harry Potter. Sure hope you get some help at work soon!

I know exactly what you mean regarding cancel culture. I’ve no brief for J.K. Rowling, either. But taking it out on fan fiction creators is just ridiculous. As for the situation at work – I recall my sister being in the same state when two people left because they couldn’t handle the stress and they took faaar too long to replace only one of them. I hope your bosses soon see sense! Have a good week:).
I know he is already looking for people to replace my colleagues. But it might take time…

Yeah i’m all for not supporting JK rowling, but that’s going a tad too far.. fanfictions are just that- FAN fiction, she don’t get money out of those. On that stance, there is worst things than that.

I hope they get you some help at work. Hang in there! People are out of control. I remember when I thought social media was great, but it has evolved to be a weapon which wasn’t the intention. I hate seeing stories like this, but they seem so common place. Sad.
Social media has evolved so much since I began as a blogger in 2017 Sam!
I don’t like cancel culture either, it definitely hurts people. And besides, the Dramione fan fiction is very popular now so I don’t know why poor Julie Soto has to suffer!

I hear you Sophie. You don’t get to cancel people because they have different opinions, religions, cultures or whatever. You don’t have to follow their opinions or buy their books, so if they aren’t hurting you leave them alone.
