Synopsis

In the shocking finale to the bestselling series that began with Stalking Jack the Ripper, Audrey Rose and Thomas are on the hunt for the depraved, elusive killer known as the White City Devil. A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer—or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.Audrey Rose Wadsworth and Thomas Cresswell have landed in America, a bold, brash land unlike the genteel streets of London they knew. But like London, the city of Chicago hides its dark secrets well. When the two attend the spectacular World’s Fair, they find the once-in-a-lifetime event tainted with reports of missing people and unsolved murders.

Determined to help, Audrey Rose and Thomas begin their investigations, only to find themselves facing a serial killer unlike any they’ve heard of before. Identifying him is one thing, but capturing him—and getting dangerously lost in the infamous Murder Hotel he constructed as a terrifying torture device—is another.

Will Audrey Rose and Thomas see their last mystery to the end—together and in love—or will their fortunes finally run out when their most depraved adversary makes one final, devastating kill?

Audiobook review

5 stars and 5 stars for the whole series

“At some point, we’re all someone’s hero and another’s villain. It’s all a matter of perspective.”

I binge listened to the whole series in 4 weeks! That must be around 50 hours of listening to Audrey Rose and Thomas Cresswell.

I am now very sad that their adventures came to an end.

This last instalment is once more amazing.

The synopsis is saying: “A deadly game of cat-and-mouse has them fighting to stay one step ahead of the brilliant serial killer—or see their fateful romance cut short by unspeakable tragedy.” and honestly, it’s the best tagline you could give that brilliant book!

Focusing first on Audrey Rose and Thomas ‘s personal adventures that had me becoming mad as everything seemed to conspire against these two, we’ll shift to “finding the criminal” trope.

“Beyond life, beyond death, my love for thee is eternal.”

We were allowed to finally meet Audrey Rose grandma and learn some stunning revelations about her family! Thomas Cresswell is not the only one to have some surprises up his family tree! Her grandma was a force to be reckoned with! She will push Audrey Rose to do what it takes to reach her goal.

“You fight. You fight for what you want. You do not wallow or surrender. The lesson in not in lying down and allowing yourself to be stabbed, child. It’s in pushing yourself up and battling back.” Her eyes flashed. “You fell down. So? Will you stay there, weeping over skinned knees? Or will you brush off your skirts, adjust your hair, and carry on? Do not relinquish your grasp on hope. It’s one go the best weapons anyone possesses.”
And I also loved reading once more about lavish homes, beautiful gowns and all that made that particular era so dear to my heart!

I was also astonished to learn the wonders mister Nicolas Tesla  worked at that time and had no idea the car brand came from that inventor.

This sequel will also have mind blowing revelations about Nathaniel, Audrey Rose’s brother! We all were so wrong all along! And for our pleasure, the mysterious and Mephistopheles will come back on the list of suspects.

As for the plot, that book was falsely “safe” in the beginning but will fall into macabre territory by the end of the book with many gory twists and turns that had my heart pounding erratically in my chest!

I feared so much for Audrey Rose!!!!

Jack the Ripper has never killed so many victims! Their amount was dizzying and the police pretended there wasn’t any problem for fear of tearing the reputation of Chicago!

It’s the fourth book in a row and none is the same as the other. Kerry proves that she can maintain the quality throughout every book of a series and that’s not an easy feat as usually in a series, some books lack the little something we found in the others. But no, I was enthralled and gripped from the beginning to the end of this series!

We still have that legendary duo working so perfectly together to elucidate the crimes and their no less legendary banter that made me fall so hard for that series!

“You do say you like a man with a rather large—”

“Stop.” I held my hand up. “I beg of you. My uncle is right there.”

“Brain.” He finished anyway, grinning at my reddening face. “You truly astound me with the direction your filthy mind travels in, Wadsworth.”
Thomas and Audrey Rose’s banter was one of the biggest assets of these stories! I need more!

I hope that my reviews convinced you to give this amazing series a chance! And if you love audiobooks, the narrator is just excellent!

Thanks for reading!
