From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Brandon Sanderson comes the final book in an epic series about a girl who will travel beyond the stars to save the world she loves from destruction.
Spensa made it out of the Nowhere, but what she saw in the space between the stars has changed her forever. She came face to face with the Delvers, and finally got answers to the questions she’s had about her own strange Cytonic gifts.
The Superiority didn’t stop in it’s fight for galactic dominance while she was gone, though. Spensa’s team, Skyward Flight, was able to hold Winzik off, and even collect allies to help with the cause, but it’s only a matter of time until humanity–and the rest of the galaxy–falls.
Defeating them will require all the knowledge Spensa gathered while in the Nowhere. But being Cytonic is more complicated than she ever could have imagined. Now, Spensa must ask herself: how far is she willing to go for victory, if it means losing herself–and her friends–in the process.
The final book in the Skyward series will free humanity, or see it fall forever.
A brilliant 5 stars for the whole series and I am bowing down to Brandon Sanderson and Suzy Jackson, our fantastic narrator!
“I don’t think most people want to do what’s right. That’s what makes doing the right thing noble. It’s a conscious choice. A hard one. If it were easy, then why would we respect it so much?”
Making this a coherent review will be hard as I was a jumble of emotions and elation after finishing that book!
What’s certain is that it’s a very worthy conclusion to that amazing series that I know I’ll reread in the future!
Now that Spensa is out of the Nowhere, what can you expect of that book?
-A hell of a character growth!
Spensa began this series being hotheaded and ready to bath in the blood of her enemies but after what she went through, she is deeply changed!
At the beginning of the story, Spensa is so heavy. Becoming part Delver herself, she now feels everything, every emotion from everyone, even the enemies. That makes them real and not an anonymous force to fight. It’s harder to blow up someone when you are overcome by his feelings.
–Amazing friendship yet again.
To cope with all these emotions, Spensa decides to see herself as a weapon to win that war. She is now changed, not totally human any longer and she is extremely powerful. And, as all the stories she so loves, she doesn’t expect to stay with her friends and family by the end of the journey. She doesn’t feel like she fits any longer, distancing herself from friends and family.
BUT her friends are relentless and determined to accept her as she is. They’ll push and pull, will follow her on impossible missions, all because Spensa is still a part of Skyward Flight!
And I love that the crew was reunited once more!
Brendan shows us that friends and family are our strength. They help us shoulder life’s blows, go through grief and pain without losing ourselves.
-Tons of actions and twists.
That book is full of action and daring moves from Spensa in the first part. But she is not the only family member who has a leading role: Grangran will be amazing! Showing up in Spensa’s cockpit and knitting all the while imparting some wisdom.
Expect big surprises from Grangran!
And when I read :
““I’m almost ninety, you know. I was starting to think I wouldn’t get to tear down any galactic empires in my lifetime, which would have been positively tragic.” It’s obvious whom inspired Spensa’s quips! 😉
–Sides characters that are way more than props!
The side characters are just perfect! Mbot being an irresistible blend of wonder, wisdom and wit. He had the best lines and comic relief!
Kimmilin with her Saint’s quotes but always having Spensa’s back, Ned who made me cry but is incredibly resistant, FM ever the fashionista, matching the color of the sling for her slug to her uniform…
Even the slugs take a central part in that story and I adore Doomslug!
–Some evil villains, of course
Winzik is not the only villain. Blade will haunt and taunt Spensa. She is “the one that got away”, the one Spensa could not rally to her side and that’s a thorn in Spensa’s side.
-A mature relationship between two young adults/teens
I love Jorgen and Spensa’s relationship, it’s a thing to admire. I think Mogsy https://bibliosanctum.com/ nailed it when she said they don’t feel YA as they TALK about their problems and differences, jokingly wondering if Brandon Sanderson knows how to do YA. But yes, they had their ups and downs yet instead of letting miscommunication fester, they ironed out their differences and talked!
-A perfect ending and we’ll get another series with Skyward Legacy!
I am always nervous when I get to the end of a series but the conclusion is satisfying, ties all lose ends, is true to the characters and paves the way for another series happening in the same universe! I am so pleased to know we’ll have a Skwyard Legacy!!!!
OK folks, just read (or listen) that series!
Thanks for reading.
