This was of a book box and I read it as part of a book club read.
“Like a weary bird flying out over the most desolate sea, I finally had a place to land.”
Fable as you can read in the synopsis, has been abandoned by her father four years ago. At age 14 she had to survive and fend for herself on an island where life was very harsh. Can you imagine it? Abandonning your child for years on an inhospitable island because that’s “better for her”???
Fable survived while diving to the bottom of the sea, without oxigen bottle, to find gems and sones that she would tarde later to West, a young trader.
Life on the island was harsh as Fable had to hide her treasures and sleep in trees for fear of being beaten and robbed by the other islanders.
Fable is tough and doesn’t want to owe anything to anyone! This was one of her father’s many lessons .
“Keep your knife where you can reach it.
Never, ever owe anyone anything.
Nothing is free.
Always construct a lie from truth.
Never, under any circumstances, reveal what or who matters to you.”
If her life is harsh, I truly loved how Adrienne Young depicted the sea, the fishermen, the ships. I could also see the haven Ceros as if I was walking its streets with the slums, the haven, the merchants, the fishermen, taverns etc. I was breathing salty air or riding storms while reading. The sea became a character. That’s how fantastic Adrienne’s writing and world building was.
In escaping the island, Fable will find a second family in the Marigold’s crew. Not right away but slowly they all became friends. And of course you have a love story in the making plus an old grudge ending on a big cliffhanger!
When Fable escaped the island, nearly losing her life in the process, it was in brokering a deal with West. She wanted to find her father, Saint, and work for him as he promised she could if she escaped.
Saint is feared, rich and …I didn’t like him. At all. For what he did to fable.
Who would abandon his child?
In escaping the island, Fable will find a second family in the Marigold’s crew. Not right away but slowly they all became friends. It was really a dleight to see these friendship slowly unforld as that crew was no ordinary crew and everyone kept secrets or had a hidden agenda. But they had Fable’s back, something that never happened to her since her mom died.
And of course you have a love story in the making with a very slow burn (yay!) plus an old grudge ending on a big cliffhanger!
Fable was not an outstanding book to me but a very good read nonetheless, one I want to know what will happen! I am already green with envy when I see fellow readers showing off their egalley of Namesake!
Have you read it? What did you think of it?
Thanks for reading.
