Favorite cozy crime of 2025

Fourth post in my Blogmas series and today we are talking about a genre I discovered two years ago: cozy crime/mystery!

I love reading that genre with (usually) older protagonists who proves that brain matters more than brute force. Its main characters are also usually underestimated and that makes them solving murders even more satisfying!

The first favorite today is the Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood.

This is another deliciously cozy but devilishly smart mystery/crime story!

I always love stories with unexpected heroes and Judith and her gang certainly fit the bill! I had a grand time listening to The Marlow Murder Club and wondering how Judith, seventy seven old lady, Suzie “salt-of-the-earth” (I love that expression) dog walker and Becks the respectable Vicar wife would solve these murders!
But never underestimate someone who is making crosswords for a living! They have a splendid brain! And dog walkers can be surprisingly observant too.
The odd wheel in that friends trio was Becks as I wondered how she would fare in solving the clues but she proved to be surprisingly resourceful and very brave when the time came!

The second favorite today is Vera Wong’s Guide to Snooping (On a Dead Man) by Jesse Q Sutanto

I had a grand time listening to yet another adventure of our meddlesome and amateur sleuth teashop owner.
If Vera’s life is so much better with her new found family, thanks to a man dying in her teashop and her solving the murder , she wishes she could get some excitement back. When is a good murder when you need one?
“Vera should be content. And she is, really. But she’s also kind of – dare she say it – bored.
Sometimes, all an old lady wants is a murder to solve. Is that too much to ask for ?”
Soon enough, Vera will have another chance at using her detective skills thanks to a distressed young woman trying to find her friend. As Vera can never resist helping others, she will do all that she can, snooping, meddling and imparting wisdom on whomever is willing to listen in order to solve that case.

A huge asset is the whole “found family” vibe going strong. At the end of the book, Vera’s found family will have grown once more, giving us many teary and funny moments.
