How to Enjoy Reading with Minimal Goals

Hi friends,

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Today’s theme is : bookish goals.

But honestly, what if I don’t have bookish goals? Or minimal goals? Because goals can move you forward, make you grow and learn but they can also put pressure on you. And I have decided that real life is hard enough as it is and that I don’t need added pressure. Or at least, not a lot of pressure.

1)So my first goal is to enjoy my read and live and let go!

That’s my most important moto this year: enjoy my free time.

If I read 100 books fine! If I read 30 books it will be fine too.

2)I set a very low goal on Goodreads of 50 books but it’s more to track my readings than anything else.

If I don’t meet that goal I wont be heartbroken.

3)A fun challenge: the 2025 audiobook challenge

Again that challenge is easy to me as I listen to lots of audiobooks while doing chores, driving, walking etc. So it’s zero pressure.

4)Don’t request lots of ARCs

To be certain to mood read a lot, I won’t ask for many ARCs. Max one per month. That’s what I have done last year and it worked really well!

And that’s it. Very low key as I love it this year.

Thanks for reading.

Sophie

  1. I like to set some goals that I am excited for and so I can remember what I want to read this year, I also set the goals low so I am relatively certain I will reach them. I just read a nonfiction books that mentioned how most goals people make only make them feel dread as they aren’t excited for them, so that really resonated with how I already made my reading goals for this. Like you I mostly want to have fun with reading and also set a goal to be careful with requesting review copies. Good luck with your goals!

  2. Low key or high key, whatever works for you right? I can understand not wanting any pressure at all when goals give you so much. For me, I love the feeling of filling in a bingo board or figuring out where something would fit. But hey if I don’t finish it (and I very often don’t) it’s all good because it was about the experience. Or with a goal I just look at the why.
