Hi dear friends!

This Tuesday Shanah @bionicbookworm asked us to post about or Top Main Males.

Well I don’t know you but when I read “male” I read “testosterones”, “alpha”, “strong” , “solid”, “commandeering”, “protective” etc. Everything that seems typical to masculinity.

Yes yes I know you can be male and sweet. I know that. But it’s the cavewoman in me or rather the reptilian part of my brain that speaks today!

My “women’s lib” vibe is taking a hike and decided to have a relaxing day to the beach, leaving the sweet and compliant part of my personality (the one that I usually hide deep down under) in charge.

So!

Males we were saying….

If we speak about self assured and alpha males, I came to the conclusion that few YA books have alpha males. Maybe because teenagers need to grow up some more before getting this sought after status among male characters?

But I did found some!

Here we go with a mix of adult and young adult!

Adult romance

First to come to my mind in adult romance is Remy from Real by Katy Evans!

He is an MMA fighter, ZE king of the arena! He is like a big lion and once he set his eyes on Brooke he pounced to make her his. Plus look at all the muscles!!! What I also loved is that he is the perfect blend between power and vulnerability as he is flawed! My favorite kind or hero ๐Ÿ˜€ย

Best suited quote: โ€œIโ€™ve never seen a man go after a woman like that. Holy sh*t, itโ€™s like porn with the romance.โ€ย

Second one is Tony from Consequences by Aleatha Romig

This one will be very controversial as he kidnapped and manipulated Claire so I would perfectly understand your outraged shouts BUT he is nonetheless a big bad motherf**ck** Alpha! Someone you don’t want to cross.

And one of my favorite quotes from that dark and twisted book: โ€œDo you know what happens to scar tissue? Itโ€™s the strongest part of the skin. “

Third “male “in adult romance: Julian from Twist Me by Anna Zaires.

Julian

And know you’ll all think I am a weirdo because Julian kidnapped Nora. Again an abusive relationship. BUT same as Consequences, the girl will turn the table and the man won’t be the only one holding power!

Julian was hard to love at first. He is very dark and violent. He takes what he wants and he wants Nora. But in his own sick way he cares for her and tries to protect her, make her happy. He is cruel, brutal but also tender.

Best quote to represent Julian and the relationship: He stands in the doorway like a dark angel. His hair curls a little around his face, softening the hard perfection of his features. His eyes are trained on my face, and his lips are curved in a slight smile. He’s stunning. And utterly terrifying. My instincts had been right–this man is capable of anything.โ€

OK now let’s get to Young Adult books!

First Male who is literally a male Fae: Rowan Whitethorn from Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas.

I know Rhysand is amazing and I love him to pieces but Rowan is the one I am thinking of when you utter the “male” word!

See how intimidating Rowan is! โ€œWindows ยญwere shuttered as they passed, probably because of Rowan, who looked like nothing short of death incarnate. But he was surprisingly calm with the villagers they approached. He didnโ€™t raise his voice, didnโ€™t snarl, didnโ€™t threaten. He didnโ€™t smile, but for Rowan, he was downright cheerful.โ€ย

Second Male in YA stories: Daemon from the Lux series by Jennifer L Armentrout

Daemon is cocky, arrogant, loves to command people and to bicker with Katy!

You get two quotes here because they are so Daemon!

โ€œBeautiful face. Beautiful body. Horrible attitude. It was the holy trinity of hot boys.โ€

โ€œWhy are you such an ass?” The words came out before I could think twice.
“Everyone has to excel at something, right?”
“Well, you’re doing a great job.โ€

Third Male in young adults: Mason Kade from Fallen Crest High series by Tijan

Mason is really the top of the pack! He is THE alpha of these high school student. He says “jump” and the others ask “how high?”. Everyone dances to his tune! Yup big bad alpha.

Fourth Male in Young Adults: Dimitri from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead

He is a badass killer of big bad Strigoรฏ and an amazing fight coach!

โ€œAnd than suddenly he was there, charging down the hallway like death in a cowboy duster.โ€
Fifth Male in Young Adults is Romeo from Sweet Home by Tillie Cole
I’m such a goner for damaged bad boys, all alpha-male and real protective of their girl.

Favorite quote:

โ€œYou, Molly Shakespeare, have just publicly made out with the most desirable guy on campus. A guy that never commits to anyone. A guy that other guys are shit scared of and girls would gladly give a lung for.โ€
That’s it!!!!!

Now tell me: do we share some male main characters? Or what are yours? And what is a “male” main character for you?

Talk to mama Sophie ๐Ÿ˜€

Thanks for reading!

Sophie

  1. I agree with Rowan and Daemon but to me male characters aren’t just alpha males. Some of my favorite male characters are Roth (from The Dark Elements by Jennifer L. Armentrout), Adrian Ivashkov (Bloodlines by Richelle Mead) and Will Herondale (the Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare).

  2. Oh Dimitri. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ Also I think I started reading Real but then it got really hot I had to stop reading coz I was at a public transpo that time with my kindle. I remember liking it so much but forgot to pick it up. Surely I will soon.

  3. I remember people being so anti-Rowan, because they were all stuck on that other ship, but I loved him. I thought he and Aelin were a fantastic pair.

  4. I love these types of males…..well actually I love all kinds of males lol. I’ve only read Daemon’s book but I bought Fallen Crest High a few years ago. It sounds like I need to discover that book over summer yay!

  5. I completely agree if you were to ask me 5 main males I would immediately begin thinking of alpha males. Even that first gif of yours has me drooling My first thoughts went to Soulless and Hungry Like the Wolf which are both about literal alpha werewolves <3

  6. Oh, trust you to have the hot and ready kind of Guys lining up to show us what great Alphas they are! I think you’re an expert on this topic, Sophie, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰

  7. Still laughing at “my womenโ€™s lib vibe decided to have a relaxing day to the beach.” LOL I love it! Well, you know you had me Daemon Black. Swoon! When it comes to YA he’s my #1. (Case in point: all these years later and I still follow Pepe Toth, the cover model, on Instagram. LOL) Other “manly man” favorites would be Nash and Wheeler from Jay Crownover’s Marked Men and Saints of Denver series, and Connor Cobalt from Addicted/Calloway sisters series by Krista & Becca Ritchie.

    1. Well not everyone can love them Raven! That’s why I wrote that they are controversial ๐Ÿ˜‰
