Hi friends,

Today in Top 5 Tuesday Shanah @bionicbookworm had a slightly different topic: we will speak of politics and worst rulers!

And I was thinking that I would never recall five rulers in books!

In real life that’s easy! We all know some who are liars, manipulators, misogynistics, selfish and ruthless. Some are even so incredibly dumb you wonder how they got at the top! Some of them even have an orangey skin tone that makes them blen in with the background at Halloween.

So yes, in real life we know that power often corrupts and I could have easily found a dozen of them.

Never one to turn down a challenge, I dug deep, opened treasure chests to unearth older read and ….I found them!

Surprisingly, all were in YA stories, most if not all of them in dystopian or fantasy worlds.

So without further ado, here are my evil rulers (queue the evil laughter).

.

Ladies first! I present you Queen Elara from Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard. Mind manipulator and torturer.

Then of course, President Snow in the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins! Prime manipulator too.

Then you have King Gaius also known as The Blood King (do I need to explain more?) from Falling Kingdoms by Morgan Rhodes

.

Followed by The Sultan from Rebel of the Sand by Alwyn Hamilton. Also prime manipulator that had nearly me empathizing with him!

And closing it today is Ghassan the cruel ruler from City of Brass by SA Chakraborty who blackmailed Nari all the time!

And I realized that I know many villains in books but not all are rulers, far from it! Even if they want to rule worlds like Voldemort for example.

What are your worst fictional rulers?

Thanks for reading!

Sophie

  1. Great list you have there. President Snow is a piece of work. Super manipulative, almost a Stalin type of character, makes you feel blessed to live in such a free country where we have empowerment over our own lives.
