Hi dear friends!
Today is top 5 Tuseday and I confess that I was a little bit puzzled at today’s topic as Shanah, from @bionicbookworm, asked us to talk about our favorite magical creatures.
I read lots of books with magic but I don’t think a lot about magical creatures nor know all about their strength and weaknesses, origins and quirks!
What is considered a magical creature?
Must said creature has an animal form or are humanoide shapes allowed?
Is it only a “being” either magical or able to wield magic?
I decided to tweak this week’s theme a little and go for my favorite books with magic and magical creatures!
No promises to stop at five though …. πΒ
First book the one who made me fall in love with magic and fantasy: Harry Potter of course!
I bet you can find any magical creature in that book beginning with the wielders of magic: the sorcerers!
Out of the blue: when I was thinking about magical creatures I thought about unicorns and believed that Harry’s patronus was a unicorn. Of course I was wrong as it’s a stag BUT as I was looking into it I stumbled upon a quizz to find my own patronus. I got a hare like Luna Lovegood but if you want to take the quizz, here is the link: https://www.buzzfeed.com/ariellecalderon/whats-your-patronus
Second book that I recall being filled with magical creatures and mixing humor and suspense: The Shadowfall Series by CC Hunter!
You have werewolves (Lucaaaas!), Fae boys, witches, vampires ….
Third book or rather series with vampires and alchemists and … Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead.
By the way, the books are much, much better than the movie! The movie was really lame. Like rotten tomatoes lame!
Richelle Mead also introduced me to a very interesting magical creature: the succubus and the incubus! I loved her Georgina Kincaid series! By the way this is NOT YA as it has very sexy scenes!
Another series filled to the brim with magical creatures like vampires, werewolves, nymphs, angels etc. is the excellent War of the Fae by Elle Casey! It is an “oldie” but certainly deserves to be read as it has action, adventure, mystery, humor and of course romance!
I said five books would probably not be enough today so I will leave you with a list of books filled with magic:
The Cruel Prince series by Holly Black (OF COURSE!!!!!!); A Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson (I read the ARC and I can’t wait for you to read it!!!); The Black Dagger Brotherhood by JR Ward (VERY ADULT), The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare (Jace!!!!), Hush Husch by Becca Fitzpatrick (Patch, sigh); The Wolves of Mercy Falls by Maggie Stiefvater (loved the atmosphere!); The Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh (very adult with a hot comandeering archangel: Raphael); Need by Carrie Jones (YA and enthralling, compelling); The King’s Trilogy by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff (adult and weird as hell!); Jessica’s Guide to dating on the Dark Side by Beth Fantaskey (real crush with hot vampire); Forever Evermore by Scarlett Dawn (NA and excellent with all kind of magical creatures); The Dark Divine by Bree Despain (werewolves and curses); Existence Trilogy by Abbi Gline (my favorite by her and Death is a magical creature right?).
And yes I know Sarah J Maas wrote fantastic books with magical creatures BUT I wanted to change this week!
Now do tell me what are your favorite magical creatures?
Thanks for reading!
Nooooo to Harry Potter!!
Mary
How did I miss this? Anyway… I’m actually thinking of reading VA.
I’ve never met anyone else who has read War of the Fae by Elle Casey! I was obsessed with her books years ago and read through everything she had released at that point, which was a lot. Thanks for the smile and making me think about a book I haven’t thought about in a while! β₯
You loved it too??? My daughter read this series and I was so happy to fangirl with her!
Love this list! I’ve read some of the books in the list and I loved all of them! My favorites magical creatures are Fae, Vampires, dragons, Sirens, mermaids/merman, and fallen angels. Vampire Academy is one of my favorites series too and I totally agree with you on the movie adaptation! It was totally cringey!
Ha! I am so happy that I was not alon in my predicament! I loved the books but the movie …still shuddering!
Great list! I think my favorite magical creatures are Callistana (they’re just so cute and can I have one?), Demons, Aliens and Vampires. Witches are amazing too. It’s so hard to pick one since there’s so many good ones.
Callistana? Oh I had no idea what that was! But now I see it’s like a small Chinese dragon! Cute one indeed π
You know me. Most of mine would have scary creatures in them. LOL One of my favorite series of all time though is The Dragonrider’s Of Pern. Love me the dragons!
Hahaha yes I know and dragons are fierce!!
I haven’t read most of the books on this list, but I do want to read Richelle Mead’s Succubus series. I think I am calling it a DNF on The Wicked King. I just cannot get into it.
Thanks for sharing! π
Damn Angie!!! This is too bad that you just don’t “click” with the Wicked King but hey if it does not work it does not work!
So glad Shiver made your list!! It’s my fave werewolf series ever!!
It was so unique Meeghan!
When I think of magical creatures, the Harry Potter series are always come to my mind. It has unicorns, dragons, three-headed dogs, mischievous fairies, etc. It has everything that a magical creature lover enjoys.
Happy readings!;)
TΓ’nia @MyLovelySecret
Thank you Thannya!!
Yay…my fave vamp series is on your list! There’s several on there that I’ve read already and several that are on my TBR!
I knew you’d appreciate that one Trisy!
It seems weird but I’ve learned that I have definite preferences when it comes to reading about magical creatures. I enjoy vampires but have no interest in werewolves. I like stories about the Fae but don’t care about witches. I guess I’m picky when it comes to magical beings!
Hahaha yes you are picky Tanya π
I was a fan of the VA series and an even bigger fan of its spinoff, Blood Lines. The world and the magic was very cool.
I’m in the middle of Sorcery of Thorns and I am loving the magic in this book!
Yessss!
Great list. I’ve been looking at the CC Hunter book for some time…
They are wonderful reads Jen!
Again, Sophie, you’ve outdone yourself. This is an awesome list of books (a lot of which I haven’t read) that inspire us, well, to read! Ha! Ha! And why stop of single animals or just five when there are so many good one’s to mention.
Oh, and now excuse me while I go find out what my patronus is … probably a frog! π
So was it a frog Alexandra? I bet for an otter LOL
Love magical creatures! I think dragons are my fave!
Yes dragons are kickass!
YESSSSSS Harry Potter is the best <3 Thanks for sharing the patronus quiz! I got a cat which is totally perfect for me <3
Of course Brittany you and the cats ;-)))))))
So many interesting books I now have to read!
Hahaha I hope your wallet will appreciate π
No promises at a top 5? Is there ever??? LOL!
No you are right Shanah *wink wink*!
Ohh that is a tricky one isn’t it!! Of course there’s Jinn’s, Genie’s, Witches and Sorcerers… those are literal magical beings. And you just killed my TBR with all those books lol. R.I.P π
Bwahahaha Bibi my work is done here!
