RomCom Review: Writing Mr Right by T.K. Leigh

Funny, witty, clever and moving story.

This is my first RomCom by TK Leigh. I’ve read her Beautiful Lies series and really loved it.

In a tiny nutshell:

Writing Mr Right is about Molly, successful smutty writer and her quest for a muse. She’s successfully published several books but lost the spark somewhere in between.
“It was all the same. Girl meets boy. Girl has no interest in boy. Boy is sexy, perhaps a bit of a player. Girl lands on boy’s dick and miraculously falls in love with boy. Boy says he doesn’t do romance, but something about girl, perhaps her gold-plated vagina, makes him change his player ways. Then they live happily ever after and fuck like bunnies well into their eighties.”
As it turns out Molly has quite a mouth on her and is disillusioned about “true love”. The plot centers on her chase for inspiration through the perfect muse.

My thoughts

First praise: Writing Mr Right may be a romantic comedy filled with witty banter and laughing chunks it certainly does not lack depth.
TK Leigh successfully features some heavy topics like Alzeihmer in what is essentially a light hearted book while keeping it real. She does not sugarcoat what this illness does to families. You’ll get the full impact of losing a beloved member of your family to this illness. The person may be physically present his/her mind has taken a definite leave of absence.
It was heart breaking witnessing Molly trying desperately to connect with her father. She was the doting daughter everyone would wish in his/her old age. No rainbows for this topic just down to earth description.

So this is a high feat combining lightness and gravity. Finding the perfect balance between hilarity and poignant.

Second praise: turning something everyone aspires to into the worse main character’s fear: love. Who would have thought love could make strong women cower?
For all Molly’s bravado and independent woman speech she is frightened to death to be vulnerable. To be left behind. Better not loving than being crushed by love.
TK Leigh chose to feature a very strong and raunchy women hightailing at the whiff of love scent. It takes an extraordinary man to get the girl! Molly had just to find her Mr Right all along trying to avoid any serious commitment.

Third thing I loved about the book: the role reversal.
Usually we have a womanizer chased by woman ready to tie down her ovaries to the hottie. Now the person leaving others in the dust is Molly! Molly is a successful erotic and smutty romance writer not believing in romance. I adored this paradox. Blazé Molly writing books so convincing about insta- love/lust when she was a love dis-believer :-). So far she’s used men as muse for her books.
It has definitely a very interesting tone as she had to (yes, had to) try a variety sex positions and naughty toys. What a woman would do for the sake of her craft LOL!

Fourth thing I adored: Drew and Molly’s family.
Molly comes from an Italian family with all that entails. Family lunch with boisterous laughters, aunts meddling with your private life and a perfect big brother, always the loyal protector! I’m an only child and I often dreamed of having a big brother. He would have been just like Drew! Protective, caring, always present.

Five: Molly’s mouth!
Molly has an extended vernacular when it comes to sex. She was downright funny and provocative and I loved her very imaginative phrasing. Just to give you a small sample of Molly’s peculiar expressions: “Clamjammer?” He lifted a brow. “It’s the female equivalent to a cockblocker. You, Noah McAllister, are clamjamming me right now.”

And of course Noah was just the perfect boyfriend.
He now sits in my personal book boyfriend pantheon. He was smart, considerate, tender, savage and commending sometimes. “Not only was he quite nice to look at, he had a beautiful heart.”

So this book is filled with humor (you’ll be a master at naming penises), romance (yes, yes I assure you), tenderness (between Molly and Drew, Molly and her niece), sadness (when Molly witnesses her father fading away day after day) and … hotness (because Noah is just like a sex God ;-)).
The big lesson is plans are meant to be derailed.
One of my favorite quote (just because I can): ”Maybe I had been subconsciously waiting to find a man who would treat me the way a woman deserved to be treated…like a queen in public and a goddess in private.”

Last some anecdote: TK Leigh really cracked me up with her warning about suing our butts if we ever sold the ARCs as she is a lawyer and… If I laughed reading it I so agree with her as I find despicable stealing other’s work. You have to know authors work long hours and sweat blood (kind of) to write their books. Selling their baby illegally is just so wrong I can’t express my outrage enough. Unfortunately that’s something happening from time to time. So yes Tracy I laughed reading your warning but I wholeheartedly agree with you.
