Synopsis

An ICU nurse accidentally uncovers a patient’s frightening past in this chilling thriller.

Meghan Michaels is trying to find balance between being a single mom to a teenage daughter and working as a full time nurse. While on duty at the hospital one day, a patient named Caitlin arrives in a coma with a traumatic brain injury, having jumped from a bridge and plunging over twenty feet to the train tracks below. 

But when a witness comes forward with shocking details about the fall, it calls everything they know into question. Was Caitlin  pushed  and if so, by whom and why? 

Meghan has always tried to stay emotionally detached from her patients, but this time, she mistakenly lets herself get too close until she’s deeply entangled in Caitlin’s and her family’s lives. Only when it’s too late, does she realize that she and her daughter could be the next victims.

Audiobook Review

4,5 stars

This is not my favorite from Mary Kubica, mainly because there are some plot points or elements added to the story that lead to…nothing.

Things that some characters did that piqued my interest but then were not exploited further for example. Maybe it was intentional and the author wanted to confuse us or send us on a goose chase but it felt more like the author forgot about these elements to me.

That being said, it remains an excellent thriller full of twists!

You have two huge twists.

The first I had never guessed, the second I thought that it could be a possibility.

Now to get back to the plot and the story.

We follow Megan, divorced and mom of a teenager working at a hospital.

Megan is caring, protective and a very good nurse! She is also a great mom even if her teenage daughter would sometimes disagree like all teenagers do.

Megan works in the ICU and today a victim of a fall from a bridge is placed into her care. The woman, Kaytlin, attempted suicide and is in a deep coma.

At the same time, there is a man assaulting and raping women in Chicago that the police is keen to catch.

Megan will soon form a bond with Kaitlyn’s mom and become a confidente for her father too. But soon the police discovers it wasn’t an attempted suicide but more an attempt at homicide.

That’s when Megan will try to solve the crime.

While attending a support group for divorced people, Megan will meet Nat, a former high school friend. She will soon guess that Nat is beaten by her husband and as a good nurse, Megan will do everything to protect her friend.

These are the main tropes in the story.

There is a constant feel of dread, due to the rapist on the lose and due to Nat’s abusive and controlling husband, always lurking in Megan’s mind.

When the truth will come to light, you will be absolutely shocked and the story will spin on its axis!

It’s extremely well done but it also has questionable morals. That unsettled me to be honest.

That being said, I listened to the audiobook in record time, enjoying the narrator and I will read many more Mary Kubica’s!
