This review will be a big challenge if I don’t want to spoil anything for you as the synopsis is really, really mysterious!
What to tell you?
First this is about one of our men in the Sparrow bunch. As two of them already had their story, I’ll leave you do the math about who is concerned.
Second : I read it in one sitting! It’s a fast read, filled with secrets, stakes are high literally and figuratively and the hero is the most “non-threatening” yet commanding that we read about so far! Once you begin the book you’ll want to read till the end because you’ll want to know “who will win” (no telling more).
Third there is of course a love story and this looks nearly like a second chance romance but one where one of the protagonists is left in the dark till the end.
Fourth: let’s talk about the main characters ….to some extent!
The female character is super smart as it seems a trend with Aleatha’s novels (to my great delight might I add) and she has been through a lot. She is not free to do as she pleases. You understand that she owes someone but you don’t know the specifics nor what that someone’s leverage is until the very last sentence. Honestly, I had guessed but maybe it was because I’ve got to know some of Aleatha’s scheming mind! I don’t think most of you will have a clue 😊 .
The male main character is part of Sparrow’s entourage and beyond the undeniable attraction (there is lots of chemistry) he also cares for that woman as they share a past. All along he’ll try to juggle his feelings for her while keeping Sparrow’s interest at heart. That’s not an easy feat and mistakes will be made that will have consequences. He is loyal, strong, protective and a genius at maths.
This being the first book of a trilogy, we will be left with some secrets unveiled without all the explanations about the “how” and “why” and “when”. But that’s just to keep us on our toes and want for more. Aleatha knows how to keep her readers interested!
So why not a 4,5 or 5 stars?
Probably because I love my heroes a little bit more “threatening” if I might say so. I love them dark LOL
More angst too, to add an extra “edge” to this novel but from what I get from the very last sentences, I’d bet my money on the extra angst in book two!
Also I would have loved to have more chapters “in the past”, not just the prologue, to help me know the characters better or rather, their past relationship. But I guess that’s what book two and three will be for!
