Standalone Sunday is a feature created by Megan@bookslayereads  where each Sunday a standalone book (not part of a series) that I loved or would recommend will be featured!

I love that meme as it takes little time to do (I’m always running like the real busy bee I am) AND I get to promote a book I really loved. This is the perfect idea for me!

If you want to play, feel free but don’t forget to tag Megan’s blog.

This week I choose to feature a dark and adult tomance book. I came to know Pepper Winters writing with Tears of Tess but as of today I still love Destroyed above all her published books so far. Many would probably disagree with me but tastes are personal so…

Destroyed by Pepper Winters

She has a secret.

I’m complicated. Not broken or ruined or running from a past I can’t face. Just complicated.

I thought my life couldn’t get any more tangled in deceit and confusion. But I hadn’t met him. I hadn’t realized how far I could fall or what I’d do to get free.

He has a secret.

I’ve never pretended to be good or deserving. I chase who I want, do what I want, act how I want.

I didn’t have time to lust after a woman I had no right to lust after. I told myself to shut up and stay hidden. But then she tried to run. I’d tasted what she could offer me and damned if I would let her go.

One secret destroys them.

5 stars

I loved it! Intense, gripping, dark … for fans of “Raw”!
I already read “Tears of Tess” and really liked it but it’s even better.

The characters are truly incredible and the violence is always lurking in a dark corner.
It’s hot and cold, a blow then a caress, high and low … a roller coaster of emotions.

What Roan does to Hazel is harsh, unforgivable and still… it’s difficult not to be drawn to him. He was the bad guy, killed innocent people, was a monster but you can’t prevent wheeping for the stolen boy. Forced in a world full of horror and conditioned to pose despicable acts. He is a product of the utmost violent upbringing and fights every day against his conditioning. It takes a very strong person to battle all the time against his inner demons and not succumb to the darkness and desperation.

Always in the dark, litterally and figuratively, Roan sees Hazel as his hope, his cure for freedom.
They both feel this strong connection but they will fight all along. Roan wants to possess her and to buy Hazel for one month. She has turned his world upside down, made him feel for the first time in his life.

Hazel is a survivor and a warrior at heart. She despises the offer to buy her services but she desperately needs the money to help healing her daughter.
She’ll meet every assault of Roan, always fighting and will overcome trials no other human could endure and survive like she did.
She shines brightly, full of empathy for Roan, wishing to help him. But she must also protect her daughter and does not have the luxury to bring her life at risk. And yet, even assaulted by Roan, she comes back and forgives many times.

As for Clara, Hazel’s daughter, she is wise beyond her age and broke my heart.

I cried a lot, for Roan, for Hazel, for Clara and had no idea what the end would be.
Incredible!
