Synopsis

Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers. When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

Review

4 “easy read” stars

Bullet point review as I am way behind on writing them!

-I haven’t read the other books in this series/universe but I had no difficulties to catch up! The world of the Wardens (Gargoyles) was explained with enough details throughout the book that I could fall into it happily.

-I liked reading the book as it’s kind of addictive and I stayed on my couch just the whole afternoon because I wanted to know how it would end.

This is not a stand-alone or I’d be rather dissatisfied with the ending as we have more to explore about Trinity and Zayne’s relationship;

Having followed Jennifer for years now, I could immediately see the similarities between Trinity and Jennifer! I thought it fun as I imagined the author projecting herself in a badass character 😉

What I am speaking of is Trinity’s progressive loss of her sight.

-The plot twist was unpredictable and dramatic! Well done here.

Zayne was not only smoking hot and badass but he was genuinely a good guy. He is a hero you’ll fall for pretty quickly.

Trinity is a badass and extra special but she also had a teenage mushy heart, all wanting to find “The One” despite her father’s grand scheme. She knew she would be used as a weapon someday but being “one of a kind” made her lonely.

-I also liked how Jennifer introduced some politics and opinion in this story that will probably echo with many readers.

I also appreciated the trope “the world is not white or black but in shades of grey” or “don’t believe everything you’ve been told since childhood”. Because that’s how it happens in real life too.

-one of the best assets of this book was the banter and the snarky comeback. I love sarcasm.

-If I had a lovely time reading the book it did not amaze me like Lux series of The Problem With Forever . It still remains a good story, perfect to enjoy on a lazy day at the pool.

Have you read it?

Thanks for reading!

  1. Yes! Addictive is definitely the word I use when describing JLA’s books. They’re just impossible to put down and are so easy to devour. Plus I always adore her characters and their snark. This book was a ton of fun! Lux is my favorite series too….although Luc in The Origin Series JUST may pass that up….don’t tell Daemon I said that though please, EEKS!

  2. I have this signed and sitting waiting for me! I just need to get it read. Soon. I keep saying that and someday it will happen. I have a little over a year left of school. I can not tell you how I can’t wait for it to be over. Like I am over being in school, I want to be out of there already. I feel like this is sucking the life out of me. =) I keep looking at the end goal…MY BSN!!

    1. Well Mary once more I’ll say it: you are so courageous!!! I don’t know how you manage everything seriously! I would just crumple or sleep for months!

  3. Great review! I’m interested in reading this due to the blindness aspect. Being legally blind myself, and missing one eye completely, characters with eye issues always draw my attention.

    1. Aislynn I think Jennifer did a great job as she knows intimately this affliction! But now how do you read our posts? Do you have an app or a tool transforming written words to voice? Or can you still read somehow?

      1. I can still see out of the remaining eye. They did preventative surgery on it when the Drs saw it was starting to go like the other one. But the peripheral vision is diminished, and that eye cannot transition distances (near to far and such) or light to dark easily. It’s a much slower reaction time. I wear glasses but the vision still ain’t great. And without them the world turns to large splats of blurred colour. I can process movement but that’s about it, unless my nose is literally inches from the object. I can read then, but it strains my eyes quickly :/ I’d be very interested to know what caused it with the author. I was born 2 1/2 months early and put in pure oxygen incubator. They didn’t know then that pure oxygen warps retinal growth. It left me with thin patches all over my retinas. One tore through and it all went downhill from there.

        1. I don’t know what cause that for Jennifer but she explains what’s it like at the end of the book. The heroine can’t see distances either and has problems with very bright light and movement too. I’d recommend it to you as I think you’d probably find many similarities here. Plus knowing Jennifer’s condition I was smiling as I kept seeing Trinity as Jennifer 😉

  4. I’ve seen mixed reviews on this one, I’m glad you liked it! Great review (bullet points are surprisingly a great way to write reviews, I kind of like it, I might start doing it )

    1. Oooh others have mixed reviews? i will look after them because I love reading these kind of reviews (don’t ask why I have no idea LOL)

  5. Great review, Sophie! I just love JLA and was so excited when she decided to do a spin-off of the Dark Elements trilogy. I liked Zayne in that one and it was good to see his story continue in this one. And Trinity was a totally kick-ass main character. She leaps before she looks but every JLA heroine does that so I kind f expected it. LOL Every scene with Roth had me howling and it made me want to reread all three original books. 🙂

    1. Well I agree with you on her heroine jumping or leaping before looking and with Roth! I want to read that story too as I did not read the Dark Elements 😉
