Studying 540 pages and parenting your old mom…

Today is Sunday time to look back in the rearview mirror and talk about my week . I am linking up to the Sunday Post hosted for years by Kimberly@caffeinatedreviewer .

In my private life

Happy Sunday,

Last week has been super busy at work (still alone to do everything but hopefully not for too long now) and my art class has been super frustrating (that didn’t help my general mood).

My life will be even busier for some weeks as I have to stury 540 pages for a work certification!!! I had asked to be planned for 2026 knowing that I will soon have weeks off work and I don’t want to study on my holiday but it seems there was a mishap and I am now planned for an exam in November or December!

Since Monday I have now read 182 pages. Some parts are very dry and everything is bluring together! I have now idea how I will remember everything!

I hope to get some guidance watching the learning videos later on.

We should be able to do that on our work time (special holiday are in the law to study) but it doesn’t seem to be the custom in my department. Plus, hey, alone and all to do the job.

That means that I have to study on my own free time…

No pleasure reading for me for some weeks :-(

Another news is my 85 years old mom begins to lie about things (like her car insurance). Her insurance company refused to insure her after three small accidents and she has now a much more expensive insurance. She never told me that! And now I realized that she has recently been to the repair shop!

I forbade her to drive any longer but that’s hard for her to swallow!

To offer some context to my US friends, in Europe we have LOTS of public transportation alternatives and my mom has at least 20 buses a day in her neighborhood! So she can perfectly live without a car. But then she complains that it takes more time to take a bus!

I replied that she was retired and had all the time in the world and that was preferable to killing a kid with her car because she was no longer able to drive.

It was a hard conversation to have, especially as she is feeling depressed…

That on top of everything and my nerves were very raw this weekend!

OK I want to end up on a positive note and I am leaving you with some reels as usual.

A funny one with the things I am good at

And another one being a kind of Vlog of my Paris trip.

On the blog last week (click on the graphic to read the post)

I posted two reviews last week (miracle!).

The Forgotten Dawn needed some more polishing but it was a first work.

Whereas Conform was also a first work, dystopian, but extremely good (at least to me of course).

That’s it!

Thanks for reading!

  1. Having those kinds of conversations with your aging parents is so difficult but necessary. It’s hard to lose any kind of independence as you get older and feel more vulnerable. I hope your mother finds a new kind of independence for herself and feels better soon!

  2. That is so hard when an adult loses the ability to handle privilege. Better that you put your foot down than have her or someone else get hurt in an accident. We’ve recently changed laws in the US for our aging population regarding driving. They will be required to retest.

  3. I’m sure I will be having conversations with my parents at some point about driving and other things and I’m not looking forward to it! I hope things smooth out soon. That exam sounds awful, and you should not be studying on your off hours.

  4. Wow – you’ve got a lot on your plate right now, Sophie. Sounds like you did the right thing with your mom and driving. I’m sure she’d feel terrible if she injured someone else.

  5. I know what you’re saying about your mom. My mom is still okay for driving at the moment. But sometimes there are other issues that I know she doesn’t want to see. I know she is having hearing problems, but if I bring it up she gets mad at me. It’s tough for sure! I know how hard it is to be doing a job alone too! I hope you are able to get that taken care of, as well as all that studying! Here’s hoping for a better week for you!

  6. You had a rough week. It is tough to have those discussions with your parents. I do think you made the right decision. Good luck with the studying. I am sure you will pass with flying colors.

  7. UGH. You do have the most lovely transportation options in Europe. I wish ours was even half as good. You can tell her we envy that option and not to have to take a car. Parking is such a hassle sometimes too. Don’t tell her buy my mom drove until 92 and didn’t have accidents. But she also lived in a rural town where they didn’t even have a grocery store!
