Hi friends,
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.
Today’s theme is : school freebie!
So I decided to make a list with ten books I think every science fiction or fantasy reader should read! These are all the ones I’d recommend to newbies to the genres and that I pushed on my kids!
And I decided to pair them each with some quote to make it fun!
Science fiction

“I live for the dream that my children will be born free. That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.’
‘I live for you,’ I say sadly.
She kisses my cheek. ‘Then you must live for more.”
― Pierce Brown, Red Rising

“The engines engaged and started to spin up, and the strangest thing happened: a wave surged inside of me, almost new to me. Anticipation. This felt like running, all right, running away from my past and everything in it. Racing full speed towards the unknown.
I was good at running.”

“Tremble and fear, all enemies!” he shouted. “For we shall shake the air with thunder and blood! Your doom is imminent!”
Fantasy

“Why are you looking at me like that?” he inquired. “You used a demonic incantation to pack my stockings!” He raised an eyebrow. “You’re right, that doesn’t sound like something a proper evil sorcerer would do. Next time, I won’t fold them.”

“But for me, life would not be worth living without at least having faith in that one thing—that there is another way, a path of justice, if you will. And that there is at least a very small sliver of hope that this path will one day be discovered.”
― Laurie Forest, The Black Witch

“War doesn’t determine who’s right. War determines who remains.”
― R.F. Kuang, The Poppy War

“She just wanted someone to want her the way Jacks had wanted this girl. And she didn’t want it to be because of a spell or a curse. Evangeline wanted a real love powerful enough to break a spell.”

“It begins with absence and desire.
It begins with blood and fear.
It begins with a discovery of witches.”
― Deborah Harkness, A Discovery of Witches

“And in the end, I knew I’d not take back a breath of it. Not the bliss I knew then, nor the pain I felt now. Not all the forsaken hours I’d spent without them, the ache of my lips without Astrid’s kiss, the emptiness of my arms without Patience’s embrace. In those few moments I had them, and if only then, I was immortal. Because they were immaculate. And they were mine.”

“You could rattle the stars,” she whispered. “You could do anything, if only you dared. And deep down, you know it, too. That’s what scares you most.”
― Sarah J. Maas, Throne of Glass
Thanls for reading?
Sophie

Yes! Throne of Glass!

I really really really need to read Honor Among Thieves and Sorcery of Thorns!
Yes you do 😉
Love the list Sophie! I loved Throne of Glass and Sorcery of Thorns, but most of the others are still on my TBR. I’m currently reading A Discovery of Witches, finally 🙂
Yay!!
I really need to read Red Rising someday soon, Sophie!! 😀
I think you’ll adore it Lashaan!
Sorcery of thrones was so good! TOG is also another good one! Great list 🙂
Thank you!
So many great books on your list!
Thank you Susan!
The quote from Sorcery of Thorns is the best! 😀
Right Stephanie??
I’ve read lots of these and have others on my list. Great choices, Sophie!
Thank you Teri!
Yes! Totally agree! I do love a good book!
Right?
I so agree with many of these! Tons of them are on my favorites SFF list!
Yay!!
They all look great. I love the cover for The Poppy Wars. I’d add anything from Pintip Dunn to your list- she’s fantastic!
I need to read her Jacquie!
I have some catching up to do, lol. Definitely still trying to read Empire of the Vampire, hopefully before the second book comes out
I hope you’ll love it Tammy! But don’t fret I don’t thing we have a date for book 2 yet!
I have only read the ToG books, but they were great.
Agreed Sam!
The only one of these I’ve read is Throne of Glass. And that was so long ago that I remember very little about it. As much as I loved the ACOTAR series, I just didn’t have the same connection with ToG.
Don’t remind me that it was so long agao Tanya! I feel old ;-)))
