There is one passage in this book that is just perfect to describe that story so I will use it: “It checks all the boxes. High school sweethearts, small-town romance with quirky side characters, a bit of a mystery, with a whole lot of heartache. Oh, and don’t forget a classic second-chance romance. Maybe a little enemies to lovers snuck in there.”

Meghan Quinn knows how to write that’s a given. I nearly peed my pants while reading The Virgin Romance Novelist because I laughed way too hard for my bladder.

When I saw the blurb for this new book I did not hesitate to one click.

It had so much of my favorite tropes!

-Small town feel;

-Childhood sweetheart;

-Second chance romance;

-Sexy but damaged hero;

…..

Did it deliver? Let’s see …

The small town feel was excellent!

I loved this little coastal town with its quirky citizens. The feel that everyone knows everyone and that you have kind of a big family. A meddling family but family nonetheless. You even have an old lighthouse (I don’t know why I love lighthouses so much but they feel so romantic).

Meghan described that charming town with all its nooks, gorgeous mansions and quaint fisher houses in such a way that I could see it and breathe the salted sea breeze.

The childhood sweetheart trope was good.

We alternate between present time and flashback and all the young romance is displayed in the flashbacks.

If I truly loved reading about the young Rogan and Harper till they went to college, the college flashback just diverted my attention from the main plot and I honestly wanted to resume with the present time. But that’s me and my personal taste as I often struggle with flashbacks in stories. I usually just want to get back to the main plot.

The second chance romance.

Well I loved in the beginning how Rogan was a jerk to Harper when she got back home. Not that I like a@holes in stories but it kept things interesting. The anger, the resentment and beneath it all the passion still burning.

Yet at the same time I just wanted Rogan to get his act together and stop acting so silly!

I was conflicted and later on, without giving any spoilers away, found it a little bit too easy.

The banter and family dynamics

I think the best part of this book is the banter between the Knightly brothers and the family quirk like the fudge trials!

“Those Knightly boys can be real morons, can’t they?” That makes me chuckle and stills the churning in my stomach. “They really can be.” “And they make it seem like they’re the most intelligent men, but when it comes to love, they are deaf, blind, and stupid.”

I laughed so hard when I read some of their text banter.

The brothers have an incredible dynamic and I really liked that Brigs seems a big romantic. I would love having brothers like these!

Harper is also one who will give Rogan a run for his money if he is insufferable with her. She will hold het ground and I had to admire her for that!

So why not a four or five stars truly? I would say that this book is the perfect beach read but it would be weird as it is happening around Thanksgiving!

It is one of these “Hallmark” books: sweet, enjoyable that will let you have a good time yet something was missing for me to give it a very high rating.

I don’t know what. A kick maybe? Some added drama or angst? Less flashbacks?

Honestly I don’t know.

What I do know is that this book gets many excellent reviews and this could be the perfect read for you! I have adored other books by Meghan Quinn so I would say: make up your own opinion!
