Review for the series (3 books so far)
4 stars for the first three books of the Afterlife Academy!
And you should also know that this series is so addictive that I had barely finished reading the Reapers Book that I messaged Stephanie Hudson to know when the next book would be released!
The second thing to know about these books is that they have kickass illustrations by Caroline Fairbairn! She did a fantastic job portraying the characters and the situations, really embracing the tone of the story!
Also some context here: I read the Afterlife saga years ago and when I spotted Stephanie Hudson and Caroline Fairbairn at YALC, I couldn’t help but tell them that I had loved their series. That’s when they smoothly sold me the Glass Dagger, telling me it was YA but in the Afterlife universe.
I began reading The Glass Dagger end of last week and I devoured the three published books in a week!
The Afterlife Academy has:
-demons, angels and in between;
-a mystery (or several) beginning with the true identity of the characters;
-self-discovery and growth;
-a choice between being bad or good, whatever demon or angel you are;
-a looming war;
-humor and sarcasm;
And above all else very endearing characters!
We follow five orphans aged sixteen.
–Theo, their natural born leader and “hero boy”. He is protective at heart and loves height. He also is very intuitive and much more but I won’t give spoilers!
–Ivan a huge Russian that could pass as a giant. He is very strong and a kind soul. He too wants to protect his friends but he is conflicted as he hates fighting.
–Ena or “Streaks” a Japanese girl wearing an ice queen attitude as a defense mechanism. But she too will quickly fall for that band of misfits and would do anything to protect her new friends.
–Zane or “skater boy” rocking the punk rock look. He is an artist, has a photographic memory and is a real jockester.
–Janie or “Shy Girl”, outfitted as a goth, she is very unsecure and for good reasons but her big chocolate brown eyes will have you melt on the spot!
These teenagers will be called to attend the Ad Vitam Academy and will be in for a treat!
They will soon discover that they are demons or angels or a mix and will have to discover and master their “true self”.
Their teachers are all characters from the Afterlife saga so if you loved that series you’ll be delighted!
I won’t say more as I don’t want to spoil anything but know that every book has action, some love, found family and friendship, tons of banter and ends on a cliffhanger!
I predict that you will fall for these teenagers!
