Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

This week’s TTT topic is:  things going in the way of reading. I thought I would do a mix of things going in the way of reading AND tips to read more!

Things going in the way of reading

Work. I think for most of us work takes the majority of our time and of course, gets in the way of reading! Imagine having eight more free hours every day of the week just to read!

Sport. I love doing sports and going to the pool! Of course it’s difficult to read and swim!

Blogging and every hobby other than reading! Blogging is very time consuming! You know it as well as me;-) The same can be said of being on social media, scrolling and replying to comments.

Going out and meeting friends! Except if it’s to go to a bookclub maybe, meeting friends usually involve focusing on said friends or an activity! Hence no reading.

Doing chores like vacuuming, gardening etc. But I have a tip for reading more here!

Traveling with the family. Aside when you are on a plane or car or…and you read for the ride or flight, when traveling with your family it’s a time to focus on each other and not your books!

Tips to read more

Readwalk. I am known in my neighborhood as “the lady who reads while walking”. Because that’s what I do! And I stop for cars, to cross streets etc all while being focused on my read. As I walk a lot, this is a godsend!

Commute with public transportation instead of car. It’s well known in my country that trains are late very often. But that also means more time to read while wating on the gate or in tre train!

Listen to audiobooks while doing chores, driving, taking pictures or gardening! Audiobooks have become a godsend for me and helped me reach my reading goal! There is only vacuuming that makes impossible to listen to audiobooks. That’s why it’s officially became my least favorite chore lol

Thanks for reading!

Sophie

  1. Great advice Sophie! I agree that audiobooks are a godsend! I listen to them on my daily commute and it makes the frustration of being stuck in traffic every day a whole lot less, as at least I still get my reading in 😉

  2. Great advice on reading more! I think listening to audiobooks is the way to go!!!! It really helps get more books in. It just makes it easier to get more books read especially on work days.

  3. My kids activities tend to get in the way of reading since they do a lot of sports and almost every day it seems I am carting them around to soccer, swimming, tennis or horseback riding or whatever. These days the new Legend of Zelda game is also sucking up a lot of my time!

  4. It is difficult to read and swim. The pages get wet. LOL! Work is such a time suck. Seriously, it takes up 12.5 hours of my day. A lot of your distractions are great (other than work and chores).

  5. I love your tips, Sophie! I also commute with public transportation (as frustrating as it can sometimes be) and it does help my reading a lot. The same for listening to audiobooks while doing all kinds of things.

  6. I do love my audiobooks but I tend to listen only at specific times – like my commute, and when I’m getting ready for work in the morning. I’ve tried to listen during tasks at home but I tend to get distracted.

I don’t read while swimming (obviously), but I do get in the pool, stand at the edge and read my book. 🙂

  7. The last five years of my working life required an hour-long commute both ways, and I can agree with you that it was always time better spent reading a book rather than grumbling about the long waits… 😉
