What a week!
I told you all about my mom these last Sundays. This week it was so bad that I asked her if she wanted to spend some time in a retirement home.
We have the possibility to spend one week to one month in a retirement home in our country, if the person has difficulties, has been hospitalized etc.
She agreed, I arranged everything in a hom with an excellent reputation and on Thursday, while I was at a conference, her doctor asked me to call her. She had send my mom to the ER because she was feeling very unwell (dizziness, nausea, not able to climb stairs, high blood pressure etc).
Needless to say I left the conference early, rushed back to her house to get some necessities (toothbrush, towels, pajama etc) and then rushed to the ER.
The only thing they found that day was an extremely low level of sodium (salt) in her blood that could explain her symptoms and the forgetfulness and the confusion.
Since Thursday, she has been moved to the geriatric section and I am driving to her house, the hospital, my house etc. Cleaning her clothes and bringing her everything she could need.
The bright light is that her stay in the retirement home has been booked and I organized for her to be driven from the hospital to the retirement house.
Because…I will be in London next week for YALC!
And I told everyone (the doctors, my mom, my family) that I need that break because I am exhausted from all the stress my mother gave me.
My aunts told me not to worry, to have fun and that they would help. I could have kissed them!
Amidst all the chaos, I grasped some “me” time yesterday to:
-give an art class about book edges painting (everyone was so happy and they want to book a second session!). I am doing it for free as I love sharing my passion with others and meeting booknerds LOL;
-go choose our puppy!
The only problem: we ended up choosing two puppies, a boy and a girl :-) The girl wouldn’t leave my husband and the boy wouldn’t leave me! There were seven puppies to choose from!
We know that training them will be hard as it’s important to interact with them separately and that it will be absolute chaos but at least it will be a happy chaos! They should be ready to join our home within ten to fifteen day!

Next week will be another “low interaction” week as I will divide my time between my mom and my travel to London!

That’s scary with your mom but glad it got taken care of and that in the nursing home she will be looked after! And oh my goodness puppies! Haha just like chips, you can’t just have one :)

Wow! Happy it wasn’t something too too bad, but still! And wow that’s great of your country to do that- imean most of our elders are stuck in hospitals (though they dont need it) because eldery houses are full soo.
You’ll feel so much better, i’m glad you’re still going to YALC! The empathy fatigue from caring of a parent is real.. ive been struggling this year with that too.
Sorry to hear that your mum has been feeling so ill – but it sounds as if she’s in the right place. I hope you manage to get a chance to unwind, Sophie. I hope you manage to get some relaxation in during the coming week.

Sorry to hear about your mom, that’s tough, but it’s great that your aunts will help out so you and she can stay a bit in a retirement home (that’s pretty nice). You new pups are too cute! I look forward to more pictures of them. Have a great time at the book convention!

Oh my gosh, that’s such a stressful thing! My brother and I also dealt with breakdowns from my mom this week as we get closer to her moving date. A lot of saying she didn’t want to move that we are making her. Yet her deciding to buy a house being built was all her. Neither of us told her to go do it, we just supported and still support the decision. I hope you’re able to get some relaxing time while you’re away and don’t worry too much. And I hope your mom is doing okay too. Have a good week!
