Hi dear friends!
For our last Tuesday of April Shanah @bionicbookworm asked us about our top 5 sequels we need to get to!
Just to be clear: books written around the same bunch of characters but each independent from the others are not sequels but stand alone.
First why or when would you want a sequel?
Why we need a sequel is of course because the story is not finished. Because it left us on a cliffhanger or open ending. Some authors have the knack to leave us hanging dry on an inhuman cliffhanger! In that moment, when you read “the end, for now” you just want to hunt the author, kidnap her last newborn and threaten bodily harm if she (or he) does not deliver the sequel NOW! Ok I recognize I am not the most patient reader ….and I can be a tad dramatic 😀
So for a sequel there is unfinished business! Same feeling as when Mr finishes “his business” then falls promptyl asleep forgetting that “your” business is not taken care of …. FRUSTRATING!
Then when will you read it?
Of course when you NEED TO KNOW what will happen next! Because you are smitten with the story. Or just because you are curious about how things will turn out. Never when you DNF obviously. You must feel invested in the story.
My sequels today are the “NEED TO KNOW BECAUSE I AM SMITTEN” with the story. GIMMEEEEEEEEEE!
While selecting my books today I also noticed YOUR INFLUENCE! Because one year ago I had not read science fiction. I began with Lifel1k3 as so many of you were enthusiastic about it. And now it seems that I caught the scifi virus as 3 out of my 5 choices today are scifi books!
Last introduction words: romance does mostly stand alones with a few exceptions! Some were duologies or trilogies like The Ribbon series by Pepper Winters or The Beautiful Heart Duet by Emma Scott but they are oddities. And none that I still have to read this year.
So after all this rambling let’s get to my choices of the day!
Starsight sequel of Skyward by Brandon Sanderson
I finished Skyward last Friday (see yesterday’s review) and I need Starsight now!
All her life, Spensa has dreamed of becoming a pilot. Of proving she’s a hero like her father. She made it to the sky, but the truths she learned about her father were crushing. The rumors of his cowardice are true–he deserted his flight during battle against the Krell. Worse, though, he turned against his team and attacked them.
Spensa is sure there’s more to the story. And she’s sure that whatever happened to her father in his starship could happen to her. When she made it outside the protective shell of her planet, she heard the stars–and it was terrifying. What she learned turned her world upside down. Everything Spensa’s been taught is a lie.
But Spensa also learned a few things about herself–and she’ll travel to the end of the galaxy to save humankind if she needs to.
The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black (Do you really have to ask? Sequel of The Wicked King of course!)
He will be destruction of the crown and the ruination of the throne.
Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold onto. Jude learned this lesson when she released her control over the wicked king, Cardan, in exchange for immeasurable power.
Now as the exiled mortal Queen of Faerie, Jude is powerless and left reeling from Cardan’s betrayal. She bides her time determined to reclaim everything he took from her. Opportunity arrives in the form of her deceptive twin sister, Taryn, whose mortal life is in peril.
Jude must risk venturing back into the treacherous Faerie Court, and confront her lingering feelings for Cardan, if she wishes to save her sister. But Elfhame is not as she left it. War is brewing. As Jude slips deep within enemy lines she becomes ensnared in the conflict’s bloody politics.
And, when a dormant yet powerful curse is unleashed, panic spreads throughout the land, forcing her to choose between her ambition and her humanity…
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Holly Black, comes the highly anticipated and jaw-dropping finale to The Folk of the Air trilogy.
The good news is that Holly just announced it will be released in November 2019 instead of january 2020. Squee!
Rebel Born by Amy A. Bartol
I just need to know what happens to Roselle plus read evil cliffy here above!
Roselle faces a mind-reeling showdown with the deep state agent controlling her psyche in the conclusion to the Wall Street Journal bestselling Secondborn series.
Roselle St. Sismode is many things: victim of a conspiracy, unwilling host of an ever-evolving mind algorithm, spy for a rebel army, and heir to the Fate of Swords. As a warrior, she’s also the anticipated main event at the Secondborn Trials. When the opening ceremonies erupt in chaos, Roselle is abducted by a sadistic agent with a diabolical plan: transform Roselle into a mind-controlled assassin to topple society. But a rogue scientist has implanted Roselle with a genius technology that is far more powerful. It renders her untouchable. Faster. Stronger. And maybe immortal.
With her enhanced abilities come the highest stakes yet, as Roselle confronts shifting realities at every turn as well as her own mother’s stunning betrayal. Racing against time with a determined resistance group, can Roselle overthrow the forces of destruction and reclaim the most valuable of commodities—her humanity?
Dev1at3 by Jay Kristof
Because I need to know if Eve turns evil and I need more Lemon Fresh!
Lemon Fresh has seen better days.
After the climactic battle in Babel, she finds herself separated from Ezekiel and Cricket in the wastelands. Lemon’s abilities to manipulate electricity mark her as a deviate, and deadly corporate operatives are hunting her to use as a weapon in the war between BioMaas Incorporated and Daedelus Technologies. Instead, Lemon finds herself falling in with a group of fellow deviates—a band of teenagers with astonishing abilities, led by an enigmatic figure known as the Major, who may hold the secrets to Lemon’s past.
Meanwhile, Cricket finds himself in possession of the puritanical Brotherhood, a religious cult set for a head-on collision with the Major and his band. Searching for Lemon, Ezekiel finds a strange ally in an old enemy, and uncovers a plot that may see him reunited with his beloved Ana.
And inside Babel, a remade Eve hatches a plan to bring an end to the world.
Honor Lost (sorry no cover yet), third book in the Honors Series by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre (so unique)!
And you what are these sequels you are dying to read?
Thanks for reading!
Right now I have to read Rachel Caine’s 3 in series Wolfhunter River and The Bride Test – These are the two that are must for me.
Mary
I got The Bride Test last week in my mailbox!!
I wish I could make it happen sooner for you!
Thank you James! But except if you are versed in wizzardery …or blackmailing authors that would do too 😉
Haha. I have secrets!!!
Bwahaha…yes, unfinished business can be very frustrating!! 🙂 I’m looking forward to book 2 in The Ivy Blackwood Chronicles by L.A. Fiore and book 2 in The Leather & Lace Duet by Janine Infante Bosco!
I think I have the first Ivy Blackwood on my kindle Trisy!
Starsight….yeeeeees!
I want to start the Honours series by Caine and Aguirre. I loved a book by Aguirre and this series has gotten a lot of love, so it looks like a perfect option to get more of her writing talent. As for me, I need to check out the sequel in the Iskari series… I’m so excited for it, and it’s out, I’m the only one holding myself back right now.
Iskari? OK give me two secs to check on GR….Oh yes !!! I will meet the author at YALC this summer and I need to read her books!!!!
Ahh, lucky you! Enjoy that meeting. (And reading those books. I really think you’ll enjoy.)
Definitely DEV1AT3 – still hoping for an ARC!
You’d be luckier than me Teri but I wish that you get it!
Of course I also named Queen of Nothing. That book can’t come out soon enough!
Exactly!
Oh Sophie! I haven’t started any of these series – although I do own Holly Black’s (yeah, that’s how I roll 😉 ) – but I WANT to read them all now! LOL I look forward to seeing your thoughts on these. As for sequels I’m looking forward to…well, I was excited for Kristen Ashley’s sequel to The Hookup and it released yesterday (The Slow Burn). I’m sure there are others but I haven’t had enough coffee yet to be able to remember them! 😀
Oooh Brandee enjoy KA!!! And the bright side is when you’ll buy the last Holly Black you will binge read while we suffered for months between books!
Lemon Fresh certainly has seen better days. I’m not sure you do want DEV1AT3 Sophie!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Please don’t say this Meeghan!
I’m not finished yet, but I’ve heard it’s a cliffhanger and I am terrified!!
Ok I will come to you and we will rant and lament together! Lol
Ha! Ha! I love that you ‘discovered’ SF and seen that it can have action and adventure, love and romance, and lots of great characters we want more of! 😀 Oh, and I hope you get to read your sequels too. 😉
Oh my goodness, still laughing at “Mr taking care of his business and forgetting your business.” That’s princely!
I’m definitely excited for Queen of Nothing. And thrilled that it’s coming out in November instead of next year as I expected!
LOL I could not stay silent Tanya! 😀
Me too Alexandra!!!
I feel the same way about science fiction. For the most part, I honestly thought I didn’t like it until people started pushing me towards reading it more and I realized I just wasn’t reading the right things.
Oooh what are your fav Hannie?
The thing that really got me into science fiction was playing the Mass Effect trilogy, actually. From there, however, I got really sucked into the Illuminae Files.
I will go listen to The Mass Effect! And I am busy reading Illuminae rightnow!
“Same feeling as when Mr finishes “his business” then falls promptyl asleep forgetting that “your” business is not taken care of …. FRUSTRATING!”
That might be the best thing you have ever said
Also I am sooooo excited that the release date for Queen of Nothing has been moved up *squeals*
Bwahahahah Brittany I was tired and when I am tired my brain goes crazy but yes I think it is a very true comparison LOL
I’m super excited for Queen Of Nothing, Finale By Stephanie Garber, Deviate By Jay Kristoff, Dark Dawn By Jay Kristoff, Starsight, and also Honor Lost!
Me tooooooooooooo!!!
I have a long list os sequels I’m waiting for. Top of the list is Hell Divers V which should arrive on the 7th!
Barely 4 days to wait now!!!
I think the blogging community collectively freaked out when we heard about Queen of Nothing being moved up. Hope it ends up blowing all our socks off.
Me too Alicia! It would be too bad if we ended up disappointed!!!
I hate life or death cliffhanger endings with a passion, so I totally agree with the kidnapping scenario ;-). I will be reading Viktor by Teresa Gabelman and The Mint Julep Murders by Angie Fox as they magically appeared on my Kindle this week – I love pre-ordering! Lol!
Hahaha I love pre-ordering too Flora!
The Queen of Nothing obviously. And the next Sierra Simon book lol
Of course you would say Sierra!
