The stunning third book in the sexy, action-packed Crescent City series, following the global bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath.

Bryce Quinlan never expected to see a world other than Midgard, but now that she has, all she wants is to get back. Everything she loves is in Midgard: her family, her friends, her mate. Stranded in a strange new world, she’s going to need all her wits about her to get home again. And that’s no easy feat when she has no idea who to trust.

Hunt Athalar has found himself in some deep holes in his life, but this one might be the deepest of all. After a few brief months with everything he ever wanted, he’s in the Asteri’s dungeons again, stripped of his freedom and without a clue as to Bryce’s fate. He’s desperate to help her, but until he can escape the Asteri’s leash, his hands are quite literally tied.

In this sexy, breathtaking sequel to the #1 bestsellers House of Earth and Blood and House of Sky and Breath, Sarah J. Maas’s Crescent City series reaches new heights as Bryce and Hunt’s world is brought to the brink of collapse-with its future resting on their shoulders.

Spoiler free Audiobook Review

“I believe it all happened for a reason. I believe it wasn’t for nothing”

6 stars

Just WOW!

Sarah J Maas redeemed herself to my eyes!

I had given 3 stars to House of Sky and Breath, something I never thought I would do to a SJM book.

And I was not excited AT ALL to read House of Flame and Shadow (HOFAS) as I just wanted to read Azriel’s story. BUT like House of Silver Flame when she made me love Nesta when I despised her so far, so basically doing the impossible, Sarah J Maas did it again!

I shouldn’t have been surprised. She also did the same with Tower of Dawn that I didn’t want to read either and ended up adoring.

But let’s get to the core of that spoiler free review!

I will use every argument I wrote that I didn’t like in HOSAB and explain why I am happy this time.

In House of Sky and Breath I said:

-“-the storyarc was all over the place! It didn’t seem that the characters had a real goal or when they got something to do, they did it reluctantly. I didn’t see a drive , a real “quest” in this story.” Well I am very happy to say that this book has a very clear quest: to kick the Asteri’s behind and eradicate their existence from Mitgard. The plot is quiet straightforward even if a lot happen but we don’t lose time meandering unnecessarily.

-“-the big reveal!
I won’t tell you what the big reveal was obviously (spoiler free remember) but when I learned about it, I was all: “Seriously? You want to go that way???” with eye roll and all because that does not make sense with the story and genre;” Well it is to be believed that I had time to get used to the idea of that super arc uniting SJM’s books because it didn’t bother me at all now.

What I also really appreciated is how SJM chose to exploit her “other” characters (not telling more here). I feared it would be too “intertwined” and dragging on but no, it just made sense, was used for one purpose and truly served the plot.

I also liked that if we did have very sexy and explicit scenes, they were not as frequent as HOSAB turned out to be nor were lengthy (I listened in another book a sex scene for twenty minutes!!!).  If you love spice you’ll be happy and if you prefer plot over sex, like me, you’ll be happy too! Thank you SJM for toning it down and not following in the path of other well known fantasy authors who now “milk it”, pun intended here!

And of course I adored all the characters, no new ones here as we have been introduced to everyone in the other books…nearly! Every character was amazing, grew a lot and relationships be it romantic or friendship has been strengthened. You have that real “found family” and “people united around a common goal” feel.

Last but not least, special mention for Brice who kicks behinds and made me think of Aelin in Queen of Shadows a lot (with all her planning ahead, thinking crazy schemes and pulling them), for Hunt Attalar also known as “Alphahole” who will astonish you even a bit more and for his dedication to his mate.

As it’s beginning to feel like the Oscars ceremony, I will keep going and mention the amazing Lidia who is just one badass female that would do anything for those she loves and who had to endure so many things for so long I have no idea how she did it. Also Rhun who is the best brother ever and the sexier fae prince. He grew up A LOT in the story and has become someone to admire.

All the other characters too with a special fondness for the sprites!

Never underestimate little fiery  beings, they will be a game changer!

OK I am stopping here! Just know that I am very happy, very impressed and that I encourage everyone to read that series!

And special mention for the narrator who is amazing!

Thanks for reading.

  1. It seems like your dedication to this series paid off. Not sure if I would have read the next book after a meh rating (they are so long). I am still over here processing the 20 minute sex scene you listened to in another book. Oh, my!
