Hi friends,
Top 5 Tuesday is back! Long hosted by Shanah @bionicbookworm (she was the creator), she has now new challenges awaiting her and Meeghan from @meeghanreads has become our new mastermind!!!
In the meantime I participated in Top 10 Tuesday and I think I’ll still dive in when the topic will be calling to me! Maybe do both?
Anyway, today’s topic is “something went wrong”.
I love when a character and a story seems to go one way and suddenly, because of something going awry, it all goes to sh*…the wrong way!
It’s usually when a fantastic story awaits our heroes!
The books below are prime examples:
Sorcery of Thorn by Margaret Rogerson
Elisabeth Scrivener wanted to go from apprentice to warden. She was on the right path until the attack on Summerhall derailed all her plans and put a handsome magister in her path. That opened a whole new world to Elisabeth and launched her on a wild adventure where she’ll never see the world the way she did before!
Prepare to dive head first into mad escapes!
“I thought you didn’t know how to drive a carriage,” she shouted over the pounding of hooves.
“Nonsense,” Nathaniel shouted back. “I’m a fast learner when properly motivated.”
― Sorcery of Thorns
Thorn by Intisar Khanani
Alyrra is a princess abused by his brother and disregarded by her mother. She is sold to a foreign prince, set to be his bride when on her journey her maid and enemy betrays her with the help of a sorceress. All goes wrong as her appearance is robbed by her maid and she will become the goose girl, the one caring for the animals and living in a very humble abode instead of becoming a princess.
In going awry, this turn of events had also granted her more freedom than she never had in her life.
But of course she can’t stay forever in the shadow as the sorceress is dead set on making the prince suffer.
A unique tale that I recommend wholeheartedly if you are looking for something different from the fast paced and action-packed magical stories.
Crescent City: House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas
Here again you had Bryce and her friend Danika doing business as usual and partying hard. Only, one night, Bryce went out alone to party and let her friend Danika at their appartment with Danika’s pack. Bryce was dunk and high, ignoring Danika’s messages to come back and when she did… her friend and the whole pack at the appartment was dead.
This wrong turn of event will alter Bryce on a fundamental way. She will grieve deeply and lose her recklessness. Gone is the party girl. She will never drink or take drugs anymore. But this was only the beginning of a chain of events set into motioin that will shoot her in the middle of a very dangerous hunt.
And this quote had me bawling my eyes out!!!
“I am a descendant of Ranthia Drahl, Queen of Embers. She is with me now and I am not afraid. My friends are behind me, and I will protect them.”
― House of Earth and Blood
Honor Among Thieves by Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre
Zara Cole is living under the radar, on the streets but the day she’ll steal the bag of a mobster’s daughter will be her death warrant. This will push her to accept to enter the Honor program and embark on the wildest adventure of her life aboard a living ship: the leviathan Nadim.
“The engines engaged and started to spin up, and the strangest thing happened: a wave surged inside of me, almost new to me. Anticipation. This felt like running, all right, running away from my past and everything in it. Racing full speed towards the unknown.
I was good at running.”
― Honor Among Thieves
The City of Brass by SA Chakraborty

This one is an amazing trilogy I’ll never tire of recommending!
Nahri is surviving in Cairo, con artist and helper in an apothecary she has always had a gift to heal others. One day she’s been called to heal a young girl from the djinn living in her body. She’ll inadvertendly do magic and will set a chain of events in motion propelling her into the magical universe of Daevabad where djinns and magic are real. It will be the most dangerous adventure of her life. Something she had never expected!
“You’re some kind of thief, then?”
“That a very narrow-minded way of looking at it. I prefer to think of myself as a merchant of delicate tasks.”
― The City of Brass
Now what did you think of that brand new Top 5 Tuesday? And what dook would you choose for today’s topic?
Thanks for reading!
I love this topic and you’ve got some great examples here. 🙂
I want to read all of these! I just need to find the time!
I already own House of Earth and Blood and Thorn so I have no excuse really!!
How have I never heard of Thorn? It sounds amazing!
It is!
Interesting topic! I can definitely agree with Crescent City, geesh!
Yes! I am so proud we made a SJM fa of you!
Hahahaha!!
I just finished listening to City of Brass, but I’m thinking I should have read it. I enjoyed it, but it was kind of confusing with all the unfamiliar terminology. Still have Honor Among Thieves in my TBR.
I enjoyed the audiobook Teri but yes the terminology was intricate!
What a great topic! I totally agree with you about Thorn! It is one that I highly recommend as well. 🙂
Yay!!!
FIRSTLY, I love your banner. Punk Rapunzel and Flynn are my fave versions of them, plus I have a black kitty!! Two of them actually… and a very dark grey one.
Secondly, I need to read all of these!! Why is everyone adding so many books to my TBR?!!
Thank you Meeghan!!!! Next week’s topic will be harder though LOL
Sorcery of Thorns is a great pick! Why didn’t I think of that one?!
Ha! You tell me LOL
How do you like Sorcery of Thorns? I really need to read that one
I loved it Carolina!! Go for it!
