After loving The Serpent and the Wings of Night, I jumped at the chance to dive into Carissa Broadbent’s Daughter of No Worlds (thank you, Pan Macmillan Export ).

What I got—besides a breathtaking cover—was a sweeping fantasy that gripped me from start to finish.

As many fantasy, that book is on the thick side with 520 pages but I was never bored, caught into Tisaanah’s story of survival, resilience, and hope.

Here’s why this book worked so well for me:

1. An underdog but very resilient female character.

 Tisaanah is scarred, flawed, and fierce. Contrary to “pure” Valtain, she seems imperfect. Yet what she lacks in pure power she will compensate through brute force and huge will.

Never in her so far short life has she let anything defeat her.

She’s a survivor of slavery and abuse, and nothing—not pain, not fear, not even death—will stop her from fighting for freedom.

• A fantasy world with some unique magic system.

The contrast between the inward Valtain and physical Solarie powers, the Orders in their twin towers in Ara, and the mysterious weapon revealed along the way kept me hooked.

• A slow burn romance.

It will take place between a grumpy and reluctant teacher and a student determined to succeed whatever the cost, the hours, the exhaustion. Tisaanah’s dynamic with her grumpy, reluctant teacher begins with resistance and grit. But when their bond finally turns to love, I was totally in!

• A quest with heart

Tisaanah’s vow to free her best friend—and all slaves—fuels every choice she makes. The stakes are high, the dangers real, and the villains deliciously menacing.

And of course you have villains (plural), secrets, dangers , battles and twists.

Broadbent blends resilience, romance, and rebellion into a beautifully crafted story. It’s the perfect package: epic battles, layered secrets, clever twists, and an underdog heroine you’ll root for all the way.

This one left me eager to grab the sequel immediately!
