Hi friends,

It’s already day 11 of our Best Reads of 2020 and today we are talking series!

I usually do prefer standalones as I have my HEA (hopefully) in one go but some authors do write wonderful series!

I think series, especially long series, longer than a trilogy I mean, are tricky as you have to keep the quality all along and the reader has to be invested in every book.

That’s not an easy feat!

But this year, I have read some amazing series that met all these criterias.

Sometimes they were series I had began the years prior, sometimes they were brand new ones!

My winners (yes plural today) are:

The Poppy War by RF Kuang with The Burning God

RF Kuang will always remain an author that I equally want and fear to read!

β€œShe saw it in a flash of utter clarity. She knew what she had to do. The only path, the only way forward. And what a familiar path it was. It was so obvious now. The world was a dream of the gods, and the gods dreamed in sequences, in symmetry, in patterns. History repeated itself, and she was only the latest iteration of the same scene in a tapestry that had been spun long before her birth.”
― R.F. Kuang,Β The Burning God

The City of Brass with its conclusion The Empire of Gold by SA Chakraborti

I will never thank Alexandra enough for having recommended that one to me!

β€œYou bet on whether or not I kissed your wife?” Ali was aghast. “What is wrong with the two of you?” When his brother and sister only cackled harder, he drew up. “I hate you. “I hate you both.”
― S.A. Chakraborty,Β The Empire of Gold

And my forever favorite fantasy writer did it again: Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare!

β€œDo not let those who cannot see the truth tell you who you are. You are the flame that cannot be put out. You are the star that cannot be lost. You are who you have always been, and that is enough and more than enough. Anyone who looks at you and sees darkness is blind.”
― Cassandra Clare,Β Chain of Gold

What are your favorite series read this year?

Thanks for reading!

Sophie

  1. I want to read all of these! I recently bought the first couple in The Poppy War trilogy but now I’m terrified to read them!

  2. You are definitely correct in how difficult it is for series to maintain their gravitating strength for the reader, I am always impressed with how some authors can keep our interest especially in the longer run series.

  3. Ooh I loved The Burning God! And I will start The Empire of Gold tonight, so excited to see it on your list!

  4. So many fabulous books! I have a couple of Cassandra Clare’s books sitting on my shelf, I’ve never read any of her work yet but it sounds like I need to!
