Dark, Suspense, Thriller books
Do you love dark books? The ones that make you shiver and have your heart galloping like a wild horse? Or just suspense and thriller books? The on you can’t stop reading till they are finished even if you have bleary eyes at work the day after?
Yes?
Well you are lucky as I have just your next fix!
Sorry but today you’ll have three “bests of 2017”.
One is dark and twisted: Possession by Jaimie Roberts
One is suspenseful and dark/horror: Nerve Damage by JL Myers
One is a thriller/mystery: One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus
All these books are worthy of my “bests of 2017”!
Possession by Jaimie Roberts
Here is some of what I wrote about it:
So Jaimie, you won once more. You’re the Queen of Dark, Twisted but I-can’t-put-down stories.
Would I recommend this book? Absolutely not if you don’t like dark, very dark reads. Pass your way this will not be your cup of tea and you’ll end up resenting Jaimie. It would be pointless. But it will be a BIG RESOUNDING YES if you love it dark twisted and violent.
“That man over the years has become both my enemy and my savior. My fissure and my bond. My sickness and my cure. My destruction and my salvation.”
Nerve Damage by JL Myers
Here is some of what I wrote about it:
“I don’t want to spoil your fun and being a mystery I can’t tell you many things about the plot so I’ll go with analogies:
-I felt like a mouse in a trap or in a labyrinth. The hooded killer was waiting, lurking in a dark corner and I never knew when he would strike or who he would kill. I felt hunted!;
-If you can imagine how a fish out of the water must feel you have a pretty good idea of how I felt. I was not only totally out of my comfort zone rarely reading mysteries but I was also literally panting seated at the edge of my chair. Totally out of breath as it was riveting!
-you see the flight simulator astronauts have to experience? The one with the seat going in every direction so fast you can no longer tell up from down? Well that was me in the seat with my brain cells pushed in every direction to try to understand what was happening and who the killer might be!”
So in a few words it was: confusing, riveting, breathtaking and pure genius! I was left speechless and open mouthed!
One of Us is Lying by Karen McManus
Here is an excerpt of what I wrote about the story:
“I finished this book today “readwalking” home as I could not put it down. I just had to know!!!
It was like Agatha Christies happening in high school with a Gossip Girl feel. I was deeply invested in this first work by Karen M. McManus.
“It’s a great story: four good-looking, high-profile students all being investigated for murder. And nobody’s what they seem. The pressure’s on now, Bayview Police. Maybe you should be looking a little closer at Simon’s old entries. You might find some interesting hints about the Bayview Four.”
All along I was wondering: do I KNOW my kids? I mean really know them? Could I discover similar secrets or double lives? It was a somewhat unsettling but the right kind of unsettling. The one that gives you thrills because you love being a little bit frightened.”
What is your favourite dark, suspense or thriller book of 2017?
Thanks for reading!
I like dark and twisted novels! My favorite dark novel of 2017 is punk 57 by Penelope Douglas. My other favorites are split by j.b. salsbury, horrorscape series by nenia Campbell, ruthless people by J.J. McAvoy, playing with monsters by Amela Hutchins, Monster by francette phal.
Thank you for the recommendations Raven!! I’ve read and loved Punk 57 and Ruthless People too! Now I will add the others <3
I’m so excited to see what they do with OoUiL as a TV show!!!! It has all the ingredients to adapt well to the screen, I think.
