Calendar Girl is a monthly meme now hosted by Katie @nevernotreding and Adrienne @darquedreamer
The Calendar Girls is a monthly blog event that was created by Melanie at MNBernard Books, and Flavia at Flavia the Bibliophile. It was inspired by the 1961 classic song by Neil Sedaka and created to ignite fun bookish discussions among readers and bloggers.
Each month we get a new theme and choose our favorite book for the theme. The participants get to vote for their favorite.
The other fun piece to The Calendar Girls group is the Twitter chat. On the 3rd Sunday of each month, at 8 p.m. EST, Katie and Adrienne will host a chat with hashtag #CGBChat, where everyone can participate and gif away. They will get the ball rolling by asking a question or two about the theme or the picks of the month to get everyone chatting. The hashtag will be used in all tweets, so you can see all the fun!
I won’t be able to attend the chat due to the time zone difference but I do intend to participate in the meme!
This month’s theme is Best Novel Set in Summer!
Well my choice is easy: The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
Young adult at its best.
This story is cute without being overly sweet, funny but serious, light and thoughtful. It shows us sometimes the best laid plans can be derailed for the better. Take what life gives you and enjoy. Our best moments are the unexpected ones.
The characters are well developed, the friendships are heart-warming, this little gang of friends so loveable you’d like to be part of their team just to go on incredible scavenger hunts, meet at your favorite diner to gossip and jump in swimming pools on long summer nights.
Andie is a Congressman’s daughter. Her dad is immersed in his work and all her actions could reflect on his career. She’s used to maintain a façade for years now, always at the surface of things, always pretending, never exposing herself except maybe with her three best friends.
She has it all planned: she’ll follow summer classes and a prestigious internship to prepare for medical school. Never staying more than three weeks with her boyfriends she breaks up with them before getting too serious.
But sometimes life becomes messy and when a scandal hit her dad and forces him to take a step back and stay at home for some time, Andie’s summer plans come crashing down. No more prestigious summer school. What’s even worse, she’ll have to stay at home with her dad. How will she cope? She must find a job but what?
And so begins a dog walker’s career for the girl who’s never had a pet. Wearing beautiful skirts, cashmere and heels may not be the best choice to walk dogs after all.
Never mind, Andie is a strong girl and she’ll adapt discovering that sometimes it takes an unexpected bump in the road to make us discover what makes us happy, what’s important in life and how to enjoy incredible relationship.
If you love young adults, really well written summer stories with something sweet, something funny, something emotional and something wise, this could be your story.
Now what would be your pick of the month?
